Exhibition showcases experimental contemporary art from the Himalayas

2025-09-17

The Himalayas are a dream hiking destination for many mountaineers. But what about the region’s religion and culture? The exhibition "Labyrinthus Universi: Himalayan Contemporary Art" is now on at the Tainan Art Museum’s second building. It features four contemporary artists from Nepal and Bhutan.

The sound of Tibetan singing bowls echoes through the Tainan Art Museum for the opening of the new exhibition “Labyrinthus Universi: Himalayan Contemporary Art.” Each of the paintings is imbued with strong religious undertones, yet still manage to exude a light, modern feel. They’re all experimental contemporary works by artists from countries in the Himalayas.

Nobuo Takamori
Curator
Tibetan Buddhism has a unique understanding of the cosmos. But with globalization, many artists have experience traveling abroad, so it’s like they’re stuck in a labyrinth, searching for their own cultural identity.

Steven Hung
Hung’s Art Foundation chair
Since I have more than 30 years of experience collecting Himalayan art, I would like to see an exchange of artistic and historical knowledge between these two places—one in the plains of Tainan and the other in the mountains, one in a historic city, and both in historic countries.

This is the first time a public art museum in Asia is hosting a large joint exhibition dedicated to Himalayan contemporary art. It features work by four artists from Nepal and Bhutan, who are seeking to reinterpret contemporary Himalayan life using traditional art techniques. This work depicts a tiger tail extended to create a labyrinth, bringing out a smile from everyone walking past. It’s also therapeutic for the artist.

Shieh Jhy-wey
Representative to the EU
You can use the word “mischievous” to describe it. He uses very serious and traditional religious elements and modernizes them. I think it’s a really fresh take.

Before taking up his new posting, Taiwan’s Representative to the EU Shieh Jhy-wey went to Tainan to visit this rare exhibition. By viewing the works of these artists, visitors can gain an appreciation of the artistic atmosphere of the Himalayas.
