Doctors slam Trump over unfounded claims about painkillers and autism

2025-09-24

Medical experts around the world, including Taiwan, are slamming US President Donald Trump, for once again making false and unfounded claims related to medicine and public health. In the most recent instance, Trump, who has no background in medicine, claimed that pregnant women who took a specific painkiller had a higher chance of giving birth to a child with autism. The painkiller in question is Tylenol, with the active ingredient paracetamol, which is widely deemed safe for use by pregnant mothers worldwide. Doctors say there is no strong evidence linking the painkiller with autism. Let’s hear more.

Donald Trump
US President
Alright, I’ll say it. It’s not good. Don’t take it. Don’t take it. Cause there is no downside in not taking it. Fight like hell not to take it. Don’t take Tylenol. If you’re pregnant, don’t take Tylenol, and don’t give it to the baby after the baby is born.

Huang Jin-shun
Federation of Taiwan Pharmacists Associations
Public figures should be careful with what they say. Acetaminophen has been clinically proven to be safe for pregnant women to take as pain relief. I cannot at all endorse what he said.

Chen Shih-ming
Taiwan Adventist Hospital
Autism may be caused by environmental factors, social factors and sometimes even by food. I’m in awe at Trump, there are few people like him who think they are gods.

Experts say that the diagnosis of autism involves multiple complex factors, and genetics seems to be the primary cause. Paracetamol is a mild pain and fever reliever compared with other medications, and has been a preferred drug by obstetricians, gynecologists and pediatricians for decades. Experts remind the public to follow their doctor’s instructions and not change medications without expert advice.
