A devastating flash flood has left a trail of destruction in Hualien’s Guangfu Township. A barrier lake on the Matai’an Creek burst on Tuesday afternoon, sending a torrent of muddy water with debris rushing down into the town. At least 17 people have died, and dozens of others are injured or missing. Rescuers are rushing to free trapped residents, and cleanup efforts are getting started to clear the huge amount of debris left behind.
After the 1-story-high flooding subsided overnight, roads were left covered in large swathes of mud reaching knee-height. The cleanup doesn’t stop at the doorsteps. There’s also heaps of debris outside to get rid of.
The entire village was left in devastation. A cargo is seen stuck between a storefront sign and a small truck. Vehicles on the streets are stuck in thick mud.
Inside the convenience store, stocks were all buried under the mud. Many locals’ homes were also left in a mess.
There’s mud before one even reaches the ground floor. Walk a little further, one can see that everything stored in the dark room ahead were all toppled and stranded all over the place.
It’s the same in the bathroom. The sink and toilets are clogged with mud.

What you see in the front was the classroom. Even the security shutter and glass doors are completely wrecked.
Near the front door, the desks, chairs and toys are all haphazardly stacked together. This is a local charity cram school established to offer daycare to kids from less-privileged families, so that they have a safe place to be after school.

The water started seeping in from the front and the back. It was slow at first, but then it suddenly all rushed in. The height reaches up to the shoulder of an adult. I’m 167cm tall, so that makes it around 150cm. I was the only one trapped here, because I live upstairs.
The teacher said even though she still has food stockpiles at home, she’s worried about the cleanup and whether she’ll be able to run the school again soon.

花蓮馬太鞍溪堰塞湖溢流，災情慘重，最新統計，截至下午4點，累計有17人死、32傷，失聯人數降為17人。溢流幾乎毀了整個光復鄉，儘管過了一夜，市區的雨水退去，但仍留下厚厚的大片淤泥，不少居民家裡的家具全部被沖到路上，堆積在一起，挺過了大水，清理，又成了居民的新難題。
過了一夜，汪洋泥水退去後，道路上仍然留下一大片淤泥，腳踩進去，深度幾乎快要到膝蓋，路上還有一大堆雜物等著清理。
整個鄉就像被轟炸過，大型貨櫃直接騰空卡在超商招牌跟自小客車中間，路上很多車都陷在厚厚的淤泥中動彈不得。
就連超商內也一片狼藉，貨架上的物品被淹沒在淤泥中，光復鄉的居民幾乎無一倖免，滾滾泥水淹進一樓屋內，家園全毀。
還沒走下二樓階梯，地上就全是灰色淤泥，再往前走，黑漆漆的屋內，貨架紙箱被大水沖得東倒西歪。
廁所洗手台、馬桶，全都泡在灰色泥巴裡。

來到一樓門口，桌椅及玩具架，彷彿在疊疊樂，當地公益課輔班「小光故事屋」，成了災難片現場。

“水就慢慢從前面，前門跟後門漫進來，水流一開始還好，但後來就整個就暴漲起來，(高度)就是一個成人的肩膀，我一百六十七(公分) ，所以應該有一百五十(公分)吧。只有我一個(受困) ，因為其實我就住在二樓”
雖然屋內還有存糧，也已經恢復供電，但萵苣老師擔心，日後的清理才是大難題，不知何時能重新開張。
