Volunteers unearth radishes and wine while cleaning Guangfu home

2025-10-02

Thousands of volunteers have gathered in Guangfu to help those devastated by Typhoon Ragasa recover. While clearing away mud in one household, some volunteers uncovered preserved radishes that had been pickled for 20 to 30 years, along with plum wine that had been aged for several decades. Although these rare radishes are worth thousands of dollars, the homeowner decided to share them with the volunteers.

As these volunteers helped clear debris from a house in Hualien’s Guangfu Township, they unearthed several bottles of aged plum wine.

The homeowner, who had been brewing the plum wine for several decades, decided now is the time to open it and share with the volunteers.

They also uncovered aged radishes that had been pickled for 20 to 30 years, safely returning them to the hands of their owner. The glass jars and bottles may be covered in mud, but the contents within were unaffected.

After being fermented for years and years, these nutrient-rich dried radishes gain a dark coloring. The volunteers were excited to discover these treasures.

Homeowner’s daughter
She does this every year. She didn’t just start now, so there are pickled radishes and vegetables from different years.

Homeowner
Pickled radishes can be used to brew tea. It’s delicious. It’s great, it cools you down.

Aged for so long, pickled radishes like these are worth tens of thousands of NT dollars, if they are even on the market. To show her gratitude, the homeowner divided up the pickled radishes and shared them with the volunteers, bringing smiles to their faces after a day of tough physical labor.
