Large black item comes crashing down on Uber rider in Taoyuan

An Uber driver got the fright of his life, after a huge piece of a black material crashed onto his car while driving under an elevated MRT Line in Taoyuan. At first, he thought it was a large chunk of wood, but it later turned out to be a rubber bag used to collect water at the joints on the tracks. Fortunately nobody was hurt.

An Uber driver was moving along a road below the tracks of the Taoyuan Metro when a large object suddenly fell from the sky, crashing against the windscreen and giving all occupants in the car the fright of their lives.

At first I thought it was a piece of wood, but later we saw it was a thick rubber mat, a protective pad. I had a passenger, it gave us a scare.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning on Gaotie South Road in Zhongli. It turns out the object was a water collection bag from an expansion joint on the elevated tracks. Sun damage and water leaking caused it to fall off.

We urge the metro company to make improvements to prevent other road users from encountering a similar situation when passing under the tracks.

A project is underway to replace the water collection bags. Since work can only be done during a three-hour window at night, it will take a while. Our current approach is to inspect the areas first, and remove equipment that’s at risk of falling.

It’s the first time that a water bag has been involved in an incident like this. The metro system says it’s replacing them all with stainless steel alternatives. It’s apologized to the driver and will conduct inspections targeting pieces at risk of falling.

日前一輛Uber，行經桃園高鐵南路一段，突然掉落一個黑色不明物，造成車輛引擎蓋刮傷，也把車上駕駛跟乘客都嚇了好大一跳。原來這不明物，是桃捷軌道伸縮縫的集水袋，由於是橡膠材質已經老化，桃捷將全面進行更換成不鏽鋼材質。

一輛Uber開車行經桃園捷運高架軌道附近，突然間，上方掉下一個不明物體，不偏不倚砸中擋風玻璃，嚇到司機和乘客。

“我以為是木頭，事後我有去看，就是一種比較厚的橡膠皮的護墊，保護墊。當時我有載乘客，乘客有嚇一跳。”

事發在桃園中壢高鐵南路，10月7日上午，原來這是橋梁伸縮縫集水袋，因為是橡膠材質，長期曝曬老化，產生異常漏水現象。

“用路人在捷運軌道下方行駛的時候，會不會遇到類似的情況，所以要請捷運公司，務必要積極的改善。”

“原來已經有一個案子，在做集水袋的更換，因為這個都是夜間三個小時的時間才可能做，這時間會拉比較長。我們現在做法就是會先檢查，有風險會掉下來的，我們會立即拆除。”

集水袋掉落意外是第一次發生，桃捷也將全面汰換成不鏽鋼材質。對於發生砸車意外，桃捷會親自慰問，也會先全面檢查，有脫落疑慮先拆除。

Due to rampant poaching, the global rhino population has declined sharply. According to the latest statistics from the International Rhino Foundation, the number of rhinos worldwide decreased by 1,290 in 2024 compared to the previous year. Taiwan’s Leofoo Tourism Group and South Korea’s largest theme park, Everland, jointly launched an international rhino diplomacy initiative. FTV reporter Stephany Yang has the details!

Four years ago, Emma, a female white rhinos from Leofoo Village Theme Park, was relocated to Japan’s Tobu Zoo as part of a global conservation breeding initiative. Recent data from the International Rhino Foundation reveals that in 2024, the global rhino population declined by 1,290 compared to the previous year. The southern white rhino experienced the steepest drop among all subspecies, with an alarming 11.2% decrease. In response to these challenges, Taiwan and Korea have now joined forces to launch an international rhino diplomacy initiative aimed at strengthening conservation efforts.

Rhinos are among the Earth’s most precious animals, but due to poaching and shrinking habitats, over 1,000 passed away in 2024 alone. The southern white rhino is especially on the brink of extinction.

This collaborative effort seeks to promote global rhino genetic diversity, foster international animal exchange, medical care, research, and professional breeding. International workshops will be held in the future to promote more cross-border collaboration.

Previously, our zookeepers participated in a seminar hosted by Leofoo Zoo. Currently, there are six rhinos residing at Everland in South Korea. Since rhinos are known to be difficult to breed, we will leverage the advanced breeding expertise of Leofoo Zoo to support sustainable reproduction. Through exporting rhinos to Korea or animal exchanges, we aim to ensure the continued growth of the rhino population and safeguard their safety for the future.

By the end of next year, rhinos are expected to be sent to South Korea. This international conservation initiative aims to build a global rhino protection network.

Kaohsiung Golf Course converted into public park

The Kaohsiung Golf Course with a history of over 60 years was handed back to the Kaohsiung City Government at the beginning of this year when its lease was terminated. The government has since redeveloped it into a public park set to open over the Double Ten National Day weekend. The plan is to connect it with the neighboring Chengcing Lake and other green spaces, forming a space even larger than New York’s Central Park. FTV got an exclusive first look at this brand-new park.

A golf cart drives around green, open spaces, but no one is playing. While this used to be a members-only golf club, over the past year, it has been converted into a public park. Let’s take a sneak peek at this brand-new park.

Previously the Kaohsiung Golf Course, this area has been redeveloped over the past year into the Green Park. Now anyone can come here to experience the charm of this green space.

The park retains memories of its time as a golf course, including the holes, signs marking the greens, and little red water towers for washing golf balls. The Kaohsiung Golf Club opened in 1961, right next to Chengcing Lake. The city government reclaimed the land at the beginning of this year and has since been redeveloping it. The area reopens as the Kaohsiung Green Park over the National Day holiday weekend, welcoming everyone, entirely free of charge.

The golf course itself has hills, ponds, and other natural features, making for a varied terrain. So, we took a low-impact development approach, minimizing interference and preserving the original hills, ponds, and other natural elements.

In addition to maintaining its rich ecosystem, the city government also built a detention pond that can hold 25,000 tons of water.

It connects with Shuanghu Forest Park and Chengcing Lake, as well as our original special area, covering an area of nearly 400 hectares. It’s comparable in size to New York’s Central Park and similar to London’s Hyde Park.

To preserve the natural ecosystem, pets are not allowed in the park at the moment. Neither will it be used again as a golf course. Instead, this open green space is being returned to the people to enjoy.

Guangfu local pens letter for volunteers at her home on Mid-Autumn Festival

A flood survivor living on Dahua Street in Guangfu has written a letter by hand to a young couple who helped clean up her home. Grandma Ying-li is almost 70 years old and can’t access social media, so a netizen helped her post the letter so the recipients can be found. The image of the letter has gone viral online, touching the hearts of thousands.

Grandma Ying-li, who’s almost 70, remembers how swiftly the floodwaters entered her home. She said that if not for the shovel heroes, the cleanup wouldn’t have been possible. She’s written a letter by hand and hopes to have it delivered to the volunteers that helped her.

She wrote, “There were still so many beautiful young men and women on Mid-Autumn Festival helping clearing the mud that came from the drains. I was so, so touched at the sight and could almost cry. This kind of love is just so beautiful. I’m so grateful to the volunteers from all around Taiwan and the charity of Taiwan’s 23 million people.”

The young woman was as beautiful as a model, and the guy was also good-looking. The sludge is really so stubborn. I tried shoveling it but it wouldn’t budge. They’re willing to actually go scoop it up and get their hands and bodies so dirty, but they didn’t mind. Where else can you find this kind of work ethic? I don’t think I’ll be able to do it myself.

The young couple she describes was from Taipei. They did not hesitate to roll up their sleeves and get to work at the drains when they saw that she needed help.

The drains are so dirty, but they weren’t deterred by the filth and stench, or the risk of infection. They weren’t afraid of anything. They basically wiped away all our tears. We’re not in tears anymore, but full of gratitude.

The volunteers cleared the debris in Grandma Ying-li’s house and left her filled with gratitude. Grandma Ying-li says she wishes she could see the volunteers and thank them in person again.
