2025-11-06

Tourists have been left worried after visiting a popular scenic area in Taitung known for its macaques, after realizing that some of them have gone bald. The hairless monkeys have raised concerns about disease, and the relevant authorities are investigating the issue. Let’s hear more.

Voice of visitor
Saw bald monkeys
At first, I thought I was seeing white monkeys and got excited! But when I looked closely at my photos, I realized they were completely bald! Of course I’m worried, if it’s a skin disease, it could spread to all other mountain monkeys.

Visitor
Afraid of disease
I heard about it. It’s scary. Could it spread to humans?

Lee Chih-peng
Taitung County Agriculture Department
Preliminary observation suggests symptoms of a possible skin disease. We’ll conduct a joint on-site investigation with the Forestry Bureau soon.

After many years of feeding from humans, the monkeys at the tourist site are not afraid of people. They might even snatch food from tourists. The Taitung County Government is urging tourists to avoid getting too close to them to avoid any danger.

2025-11-06
