Vendors excited as pig restrictions lifted

Vendors excited as pig restrictions lifted

2025-11-06

After more than two weeks, restrictions on the transport and slaughtering on pigs are getting lifted. The restrictions were meant as containment measures to prevent the spread of African swine fever in Taiwan. And they seemed to have worked, as no more cases have been detected. But these two weeks have been long for the pork business, where vendors can’t wait to open up shops again.

Pork vendors are in high spirits. After more than two weeks, they can finally sell freshly slaughtered pork.

I’m so happy. I can finally do business, so of course I’m happy.

The transportation ban on live pigs was lifted at noon on Thursday, and on Friday, wholesales and butchering will resume. Many small eateries are breathing a sigh of relief.

Voice of Mr. Shih
Bawan vendor
I’ve placed an order. We only use ham meat. I’ve already preordered from our vendor. Once the ban is lifted, we can all do business again. We’re really looking forward to it.

What about further up the value chain? Pig farmers are worried that their pigs are not as lean anymore and so wouldn’t sell so well. In additionally, they now have 300,000 units to sell, which could drive down prices.

Mr. Su
Pig farmer
Usually we send out pigs that have reached 125kg. But now they’re around 135kg. It has put some pressure on our facilities too.

Lee I-chien
MOA Department of Animal Industry
We have made precise projections for the number of pigs to be sold every day, all the way until the end of March next year. If our projections exceed the actual number about to be put on the market, we’ll decide on a lottery basis.

The Ministry of Agriculture says it will step in to control the number of pigs supplied to the market every day to keep prices stable. At the same time, they also encourage pig farmers to work more closely with farmers’ associations and to sell more frozen pork instead.
