NTU President interviews 4 NTU graduates that became president

2025-11-07

National Taiwan University is nearing its 100th anniversary. On the lead up to the milestone, there’s many events to celebrate the history of the university. One point that has caught much attention is that all of Taiwan’s five democratically-elected presidents all graduated from NTU. To learn more about them, the NTU president hosted a series of interviews with four of them to learn more about their student days.

- There’s many opportunities in life. And being president is not necessarily the best one.

Becoming president may not necessarily be the best career choice. But for National Taiwan University, it’s certainly a big honor. All five of Taiwan’s democratically elected presidents, KMT and DPP, male and female, have been NTU alumni.

Chen Shui-bian
Former President
Not everyone running for president graduated from NTU. There were people from other schools. But yes, ever president so far were NTU graduates.

Ahead of NTU’s 100th anniversary, NTU President Chen Wen-chang personally interviewed four of the “presidential alumni,” who reminisced about their student days.

Lai Ching-te
President
I was really happy at NTU. My favorite spot is the Royal Palm Boulevard. When the azaleas are in bloom, I loved cycling back and forth along there.

Ma Ying-jeou
Former President
As a freshman, I would often take naps at the Fu Garden. When I woke up, I’d pat the tombstone and say goodbye to the NTU president.

Chen Shui-bian
Former President
There were six colleges, and each one had just one scholarship. The total was just NT$12,000. We bought our first television set with that money, and with the remaining NT$6,000, I could go on dates. If you go through four years of college without dating, university life feels kind of empty. We’d spend time together under the azalea bushes.

Chen Shui-bian reminded students to spend time both in the library and in love. Meanwhile, Tsai Ing-wen confessed that her law studies were difficult and even failed several subjects in a single semester. Going abroad to study was even tougher.

Tsai Ing-wen
Former President
I failed criminal law once. When my professor handed me the graded exam, he said, “You really have to get your concepts straight.” Studying law is really demanding in the US. I probably faced more setbacks than other students, but each time I managed to get my act together.

Chen Wen-chang
NTU President
I noticed that none of the presidents wanted the interview to end. Lai Ching-te even told me that he would like to come back and ride a bike down the Royal Palm Boulevard again.

Each interview lasted more than an hour, allowing younger students at NTU to see a different side of presidents when they were their age.
