Lorry slam sends truck smashing into eatery kitchen in Hsinchu

Workers at an eatery in Hsinchu got the scare of their lives on Wednesday after a truck came smashing into their business. The proprietress and an employee were chatting in the dining room when, out of nowhere, a truck rammed into their business, completely destroying their kitchen. It turns out the truck lost control after getting rear-ended by a big lorry at a nearby intersection. Only one person was reported injured: the driver of the truck.

A truck rams itself full speed against a small eatery. Inside, the proprietress was chatting with an employee when she heard a noise and got up to check out what it was, only to see the truck destroying her kitchen. One second more and it could’ve been the end for her, as the crash completely obliterated the kitchen. After regaining their senses, she and her employee rushed out to check the damage.

The truck stopped for the yellow light, but the lorry behind wasn’t able to stop in time, so they crashed. The truck was sent straight over. The driver couldn’t hit the brakes in time.

The sign, the counter, the extractor fan, the glass door and all sorts of kitchen utensils now lie in a wreck. The crash happened at about half past one on Wednesday afternoon in Hsinchu’s Xiangshan District. A small truck was rear-ended by a large lorry, causing it to lose control and crash against the eatery. Only the driver was left with injuries. It could’ve been worse, as the crash started a small fire. Fortunately, the proprietress quickly shut off the gas.

The traffic accident that occurred on Yanping Road Sec. 2 in Xiangshan involved a large lorry colliding against a small truck, which caused the small truck to crash against a residence on the side of the road, injuring the driver. Police have determined the drivers were not driving under the influence of alcohol.

The eatery posted a video of the crash online, expressing relief that neither of the women inside the shop were harmed. Thankfully there were also no customers inside at the time of the collision. But now, the shop doesn’t have water, electricity or gas, making it impossible to operate. They have suspended operations and are now asking for justice and compensation.

恍神沒煞車? 麵攤遭小貨車追撞起火 2婦嚇壞急奔逃

驚險一瞬間。日前新竹香山發生一起車禍，一輛小貨車遭後方聯結車追撞，導致小貨車衝進路邊一家小吃店，店內生財器具全被撞爛。更驚險的是，老闆娘聽到撞擊聲，才起身準備到外頭察看，小貨車就衝進來，差點被撞。而且這麼一撞，爐台還一度起火，幸好老闆娘立刻關掉瓦斯。

小貨車突然往路邊的小吃店，直直衝過去。小吃店老闆娘本來和員工聊天，聽到聲響，才起剛起身走向前，小貨車突然衝進店內，就差一秒，老闆娘險些被撞。嚇得她和員工兩人往後逃命，前台廚具，幾乎都被撞得稀巴爛，等定過神來，兩人才走出店外查看。

“貨車黃燈它停下來，然後後面那一台來不及，然後就砰砰，它就直接這樣子衝到裡面去。它有煞(車)，可是還是來不及。”

招牌、工作檯面、抽油煙機、還有玻璃門，小吃店的生財器具，幾乎全毀。事發在11/19下午一點29分、新竹香山區。當時一輛小貨車，遭到後方聯結車追撞，導致失控衝撞路邊小吃店。造成小貨車駕駛一人受傷，不過撞擊後，小吃店爐台一度起火，幸好老闆娘機警關閉瓦斯。

“香山區延平路二段發生之交通事故，係為營業聯結車碰撞前方自小貨車，再導致自小貨車碰撞路邊民宅，造成自小貨車駕駛一人受傷。警方到場處理，本案並無酒駕情事。”

小吃店業者把過程po網路，直呼還好婆婆和阿姨沒事，當時店內也沒客人。只是現在家裡沒水、沒電、沒瓦斯，也無法做生意。門口貼上，因車禍事故遭潑及，得暫停營業。車禍肇責，以及後續賠償問題，都得要還給小吃店一個公道。

Fans of TWICE scream in excitement at seeing members in flesh

The members of K-pop girl group TWICE have all arrived in Kaohsiung on Friday afternoon, for their concert this weekend. It’s the first time they’re performing in Taiwan after debuting ten years ago. At the airport, fans waited excitedly to catch a glimpse of the members in person.

Fans of K-pop girl group TWICE are waiting in anticipation for the Taiwanese member Tzuyu to arrive at Kaohisung International Airport.

Every little movement from her makes the crowd go wild. Some even rushed outside to prolong the amount of time they get to see her in person.

I had this banner made for them so they get a really warm Taiwanese-style welcome. As for the poster, we especially used Bopomofo, which only Taiwanese can read and maybe only Tzuyu can read and she can teach other members.

After all, it’s the first time for them to come to Taiwan since they debuted ten years ago. We are all super excited and really looking forward to seeing Tzuyu and her bandmates at their concert in Taiwan.

As for why Tzuyu was alone, it’s because she had a clothing brand event to attend in Japan. So she only joined the other members an hour after they arrived from South Korea.

Seven other members were also welcomed by a large crowd. They waved at fans on their way to the parking lot.

- Nayeon is my favorite. I have her here. We came from Taipei. After all, it’s their first time in Taiwan in ten years. Everyone’s so excited and put in a lot of effort.

- Mina is my favorite. I’m so happy. So, so happy. My heart is pounding.

There should be nine members in total, but Chaeyoung is absent due to health reasons. However, fans in Taiwan are still happy they finally get to see TWICE without traveling abroad, for the first time in ten years. They also made sure not to miss the opportunity to get a first look of their idols at the airport.

Interview with ‘Rosemead’s’ screenwriter Marilyn Fu

Tonight, we take a closer look at “Rosemead,” a new film written by Taiwanese-American screenwriter Marilyn Fu. Inspired by a true story from a Los Angeles Times article, the movie explores themes of motherhood, mental illness and the immigrant experience. “Rosemead” has already been acclaimed at various film festivals and has earned Fu a Golden Horse Award nomination for best adapted screenplay, ahead of the awards ceremony this Saturday. FTV reporter Stephany Yang sat down with Fu to find out more.

The new film “Rosemead” tells the story of Irene, a terminally ill Chinese immigrant mother in California’s San Gabriel Valley. She is portrayed by Lucy Liu. She uncovers her schizophrenic teenage son’s obsession with mass shootings and finds ways to protect her son from hurting others. The film was inspired by a true story in an award-winning Los Angeles Times article by Frank Shyong.

So, the whole movie is what she is able to do to protect her son and the limits for her love. It turns out there are no limits to her love. Rosemead is based on a true story that happened in 2015. An LA Times journalist Frank Shyong knew about the story and was able through his persistence to gain the trust of the living people and created this article that has been so moving. The article came to me and I couldn’t put it down. I was at a point in my life where I really wanted to write a starring role for an Asian woman. Lucy Liu was interested in playing Irene and really embraced the role. It was like the stars aligned.

For Fu, the project was deeply personal. She began writing while pregnant with twin boys and the themes of motherhood resonated strongly.

When I first wrote this script, I was pregnant with my sons. I didn’t have much hands-on experience with being a mother. I think that a lot of what I put in the script was from my own mom and her relationship with me and my family. Now, when I watch the film, I see so many more things that break my heart because now they really resonate now that my sons are six years old. There is one part of the Chinese translation between Irene and Joe, between and mother and son. It is a moment when Irene says: “Wo teng ni.” When I think about translation, I know there is “teng” and there is “ai.” There isn’t really an English translation for “teng.” It has a specific meaning that is specific to our language. The root of means pain. When I discovered that it is a love that makes you hurt perhaps physically, then that made me think of motherhood in a whole other way and look at the movie differently.

The film took eight years to make, and tackles sensitive subjects and themes such as mental illness, the immigrant struggle and family. Fu says accuracy and empathy were essential in her writing process.

With “Rosemead,” it is based on a true story. It is a difficult story. It is very challenging. The people involved, Irene and Joe, along with their families really suffered through the tragedy. For me, my responsibility is also to them. I don’t want to hurt any of the living people. I want to be able to tell the story that elevates and brings it to an audience that can have an impact. I am sort of an investigator. I am going through Frank Shyong’s original article and cherry-picking the details of these people and trying to draw a portrait of them.

“Rosemead” has already been recognized at film festivals and earned Fu a Golden Horse Award nomination. She says the film’s themes resonate far beyond the Asian American community.

Our experience of taking around to film festivals has been very emotional. What we found is that as we were telling the story about a Chinese immigrant family and Asian Americans living in the San Gabriel Valley, we found that the themes really crossed cultural borders. That there were many people who understood this film. Whether they are caregivers who are taking care of somebody with mental illness or if they are someone that has something that they are dealing with throughout their whole lives. They wanted to talk to us after the screening. They wanted to express what they were going through and just connect.

Fu hopes “Rosemead” will spark a broader movement—expanding Asian representation in cinema while confronting stigmatized issues such as mental illness and the immigrant experience.

A lot of the people together, even on the filmmaking side of the movie, has experiencing of being unable to talk about sort of experiences their family and experiences with mental illness. We want with the film to be able to draw people out. We want the film to be able to draw people out to start these conversations, to expel this undercurrent of shame that might exist so that there is more healing that can exist.

Fu also hopes audiences will not only be moved by the film, but also inspired to share their own stories.
