Should you try to break up a turtle fight? Experts weigh in

2025-11-21

If you see people fighting on the street, you would probably try to step in and break it up. But what if instead of two people, it’s two sea turtles? You might want to rethink intervention, because according to the Wildlife Conservation Act, touching a sea turtle can get you slapped with a fine of NT$300,000. And if you touch two turtles. Well, you’ll have to cough up NT$600,000.

That dilemma of whether to step in or not presented itself on a beach in Xiaoliuqiu. Two huge sea turtles were spotted tangled together, biting and slapping at each other for a while, neither willing to back down. Experts say the fight is normal animal behavior, as the two may have been trying to defend their territory. Experts warn against trying to break up the fight, as doing so could disturb the ecosystem… and your bank account.
