
Today we take you to meet Olga Vasylieva, a Reformer Pilates instructor from Ukraine. Prior to coaching, she was a professional ballroom dancer. After getting injured, she started practicing Reformer Pilates and is now an instructor conducting classes in both Mandarin Chinese and English. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to Olga to find out more about Pilates and her life in Taiwan.
Olga carefully explains the Reformers Pilates movement. She started dancing at a very young age, representing Ukraine in professional ballroom dancing competitions. After getting injured from dancing, she decided to try Reformer Pilates.

I have been doing sports and dance for quite a long time. For 25 years, I have been dancing ballroom, belly dance, and Pilates. Before, while I was dancing professionally, I had a lot of body injuries. Sometimes I thought it would be forever, I will have it forever but one of my friends introduced Pilates to me and I tried. I found out it really worked and it solved a lot of my problems. After that, not only did I find myself healthier and happier, I also started dancing better.
Reformer Pilates is a type of Pilates exercise that is performed on a machine. This machine consists of springs, a sliding carriage, ropes, and a foot bar. These help provide resistance and support. After seeing the benefits of Reformer Pilates, she got a teaching certification and began teaching Reformer Pilates.

Every class is very different because every person, my clients, are very different. I dedicate every class according to the needs of the clients because some people are more stiff. For example, professional sportsmen. They are runners, they are riding the cycle, and they are doing different kinds of activities so they need more to stretch. So we do more stretching with them. Some people are different. Their muscles. They have to gain muscle. Their muscles are not enough for them to live a normal life. In Pilates, we build more inner muscles, deeper muscles that we normally don’t use in real life or in the gym or in other sorts of activities so when you go to gym, you start to feel, oh, I can do it much better.
Olga moved to Taiwan five years ago for her master’s program. Olga says she loves Taiwan’s kind people and delicious food. Her favorite food is stinky tofu.

When I came to Taiwan the first month, I was like, "Oh my God, I am the happiest person in the world." Because in Taiwan, the weather is so good. A lot of fruits and a lot of vegetables. People are so nice. I was like "Oh my gosh, is it like a fairytale? Am I in heaven?" I was so happy. I was so happy. Of course, sometimes I miss Ukraine but my life is in Taiwan now. And food, I really like stinky tofu.
Calling Taiwan her second home, Olga hopes to settle down here and let more people back in Ukraine know about the beauty of Taiwan.

"我從事體育和舞蹈已有很長時間了。25年來,我一直在跳國標舞、肚皮舞和皮拉提斯。以前,當我是職業舞者時,的身體受過很多傷,有時我認為這是永久的,但我的一位朋友向我介紹了皮拉提斯,我嘗試之後,發現確實有效並且解決了我的許多問題。在那之後,我不僅發現自己更健康、更快樂,而且我也開始跳得更好。"
器械皮拉提斯是一種在機器上進行的皮拉提斯運動。機器由彈簧、滑架、繩索和腳踏桿組成。這些有助於提供阻力和支撐。在體驗到塑器械皮拉提斯的好處後,她取得教學證書並開始投入器械皮拉提斯教學。

"每個班級都非常不同,因為每個人,我的學生,都非常不同。我根據他們的需求來安排每一堂課,因為有些人比較僵硬。例如,職業運動員。他們是跑者,他們騎自行車,他們正在進行不同類型的活動,因此他們需要更多的伸展。所以我們和他們一起做更多的伸展運動。有些人則不同,他們的肌肉,必須增加肌肉。他們的肌肉不足。在皮拉提斯中,我們鍛鍊了更多的內部肌肉、更深層的肌肉,這些肌肉是我們通常在現實生活中、健身房或其他類型的活動中不會使用的,所以當你去健身房時,你開始感覺,哦,我可以做得更好。"
五年前,奧莉到台灣攻讀碩士學位。奧莉說她喜歡台灣是友善的人,和美味的食物,她最喜歡的食物是臭豆腐。

"當我來到台灣的第一個月時,我就想:天哪,我是世界上最幸福的人。因為台灣的天氣太好了。很多水果和很多蔬菜。人們真是太好了。我當時想:天哪,這像童話故事嗎?我是在天堂嗎?我很高興。當然,有時我會想念烏克蘭,但我現在的生活是在台灣。還有食物,我很喜歡臭豆腐。"
奧莉說台灣是她的第二個家,她希望能在這裡定居,也讓更多烏克蘭人認識台灣的美麗。
