Public puzzled by cat-shaped shadow in KMRT station light

Passersby recently discovered that an outdoor light at the Kaohsiung MRT’s Formosa Boulevard Station had an unusual shadow shaped like a cat. They thought it might be an art installation, until they looked closer to discover it was a real cat hiding inside. The MRT sent someone to investigate after receiving a report, and confirmed the cat had already left. They think it was just trying to stay warm as the weather got colder.

This video taken by someone walking by Formosa Boulevard Station on the Kaohsiung MRT shows the shadow of a small animal inside the lit station sign. At first glance, they thought it was an art installation.

A woman pointed her phone camera underneath the sign to get a look inside. Turns out it was a real-live cat.

After receiving a report about this matter, we immediately sent personnel to patrol and provide assistance. They confirmed that the cat was gone and not in danger.

Cats want to be warm in winter, so it went inside the lightbox. They also like to go inside the engine area of cars to stay warm.

The Kaohsiung MRT said that station staff regularly patrol the area. If there are any irregularities, they will be discovered, meaning that no cat will be in peril for long.

高雄捷運美麗島站的戶外燈箱，有民眾發現晚間出現了一個貓咪的造型，一度以為是裝置藝術嗎？不過仔細往裡面一看，居然是一隻真的貓咪躲在裡面，高捷公司獲報後，也趕緊派員到場，確認貓咪已經離開，初步判斷可能是天氣變冷，才會躲進去取暖。

民眾拍下，高捷美麗島站的站牌燈箱，出現一個小動物的影子，乍看之間，還一度以為又是新的裝置藝術嗎？

一名女子把手機擺在下方，往內一照，發現燈箱裡面，居然躲著一隻真正的貓咪。

“貓在冬天的時候想要溫暖一點，所以牠跑到裡面去，也很容易跑到汽車的引擎那邊去保溫”

高捷表示，站務人員都有例行巡察，如果有異狀的話會發現，因此不至於讓貓咪長期受困。

Scooter exports grow rapidly as Taiwan manufacturers go international

The Taiwanese scooter industry has been pushing into foreign markets, with exports to Spain and Australia growing especially fast. Experts say that Taiwanese scooters have technologically strong engines and high standards for fuel consumption and emissions that gives them a competitive edge internationally. Exports of four-wheeled ATVs are also growing, notably to big countries like Australia and the US.

From large boulevards to small alleys, scooters are an inseparable part of traffic in Taiwan. The domestic scooter industry has always been busy, and now it is expanding into the international market.

The main competitive edge of motorcycles lies in scooters, which we call plastic bikes or small “sheep” bikes. Research and development have been ongoing for many years, and in terms of emissions and energy efficiency, Taiwan’s technology is highly advanced.

In the first nine months of this year, Japan bought the most Taiwanese scooters and Spain the second-most, with exports to the latter growing by 243% annually. Australia, in fifth place, imported NT$240 million worth of scooters, 29 times the amount during the same period last year.

If Taiwan’s vehicle models and manufacturers can meet these strict environmental regulations, then exporting them becomes effortless. Even older engine technology is sufficient. In terms of vehicle types and engine technology, we have already established a clear lead.

Four-wheeled ATVs are also a strength of Taiwan, great for bigger countries like Australia and the US.

Man caught upskirting MRT passenger with hidden camera

Upskirting incidents on the Taipei MRT are not unheard of, but another case emerged just as recently as Monday evening, at around 6:30. The victim had just gotten off work and was taking the MRT home, when she was upskirted by a man standing right behind her. To make things worse, the perpetrator may have stalked her, since she remember seeing him just the day before. She said that she’s now afraid to take the MRT alone.

The man in a black jacket is surrounded by the MRT police and ordered to empty his bag. Just a few minutes ago, he was reported for upskirting a passenger with a hidden camera.

The hidden camera was held close towards the hemline of my skirt. Yesterday he stood right behind me very, very closely.

The victim even encountered the same man on the MRT the previous day, which frightened her. When she caught the act, she took a photo of the area around the perpetrator’s bag and feet as evidence.

This was how he did it. The lens was here, and photos were taken this way. Then he hid the lens by clutching the bag against himself and denied taking photos secretly.

The incident happened on Monday evening, at 6:38 p.m. The victim had just gotten off work and was taking the MRT home. The MRT was crowded during rush hour, as usual, and the offender took the opportunity to get close to the victim and upskirted her. Fortunately, fellow passengers helped restrain him as soon as he was caught and attempted to flee.

I yelled, what are you doing? Are you taking photos? He reacted guiltily, so I grabbed his bag so he wouldn’t snatch it away. Another young woman also helped. She pressed the emergency intercom button and notified MRT officers.

Now I wouldn’t dare take the MRT alone, because it’s really scary. After the incident yesterday, I couldn’t stop trembling. I become hypervigilant every time a stranger brushes past me.

The perpetrator denied any wrongdoing even though he was caught red-handed. What’s more, he appears to be a repeat offender, since the police found voyeuristic photos of other victims in his device. The victim said she only hoped that offenders of secret photography could be held accountable. If you happen to encounter a similar incident, you can use the emergency intercom on the train or call 110 directly.

Spotlight on Reformer Pilates teacher, Olga Vasylieva

Today we take you to meet Olga Vasylieva, a Reformer Pilates instructor from Ukraine. Prior to coaching, she was a professional ballroom dancer. After getting injured, she started practicing Reformer Pilates and is now an instructor conducting classes in both Mandarin Chinese and English. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to Olga to find out more about Pilates and her life in Taiwan.

Olga carefully explains the Reformers Pilates movement. She started dancing at a very young age, representing Ukraine in professional ballroom dancing competitions. After getting injured from dancing, she decided to try Reformer Pilates.

I have been doing sports and dance for quite a long time. For 25 years, I have been dancing ballroom, belly dance, and Pilates. Before, while I was dancing professionally, I had a lot of body injuries. Sometimes I thought it would be forever, I will have it forever but one of my friends introduced Pilates to me and I tried. I found out it really worked and it solved a lot of my problems. After that, not only did I find myself healthier and happier, I also started dancing better.

Reformer Pilates is a type of Pilates exercise that is performed on a machine. This machine consists of springs, a sliding carriage, ropes, and a foot bar. These help provide resistance and support. After seeing the benefits of Reformer Pilates, she got a teaching certification and began teaching Reformer Pilates.

Every class is very different because every person, my clients, are very different. I dedicate every class according to the needs of the clients because some people are more stiff. For example, professional sportsmen. They are runners, they are riding the cycle, and they are doing different kinds of activities so they need more to stretch. So we do more stretching with them. Some people are different. Their muscles. They have to gain muscle. Their muscles are not enough for them to live a normal life. In Pilates, we build more inner muscles, deeper muscles that we normally don’t use in real life or in the gym or in other sorts of activities so when you go to gym, you start to feel, oh, I can do it much better.

Olga moved to Taiwan five years ago for her master’s program. Olga says she loves Taiwan’s kind people and delicious food. Her favorite food is stinky tofu.

When I came to Taiwan the first month, I was like, "Oh my God, I am the happiest person in the world." Because in Taiwan, the weather is so good. A lot of fruits and a lot of vegetables. People are so nice. I was like "Oh my gosh, is it like a fairytale? Am I in heaven?" I was so happy. I was so happy. Of course, sometimes I miss Ukraine but my life is in Taiwan now. And food, I really like stinky tofu.

Calling Taiwan her second home, Olga hopes to settle down here and let more people back in Ukraine know about the beauty of Taiwan.

On a recent episode of Joe Rogan’s podcast, Nvidia CEO Jenson Huang talked about the pressure he faces on a daily basis. Even though Nvidia is one of the world’s largest companies, Huang said he still worries every day that it may go out of business soon. This shocked Rogan, but Huang said that the fear of failure motivates him more than the desire to succeed, driving him to work harder all the time.

To make sure that Nvidia keeps succeeding, Huang is constantly working hard and maintaining his public image. He also recently did an interview with the US Center for Strategic and International Studies, discussing the benefits of TSMC building a factory in the US.

Taiwan really needs to have some acknowledgement for the incredible effort that they’re putting in place. The work that Nvidia has done in Arizona wouldn’t have made the progress it has.

In October, he visited TSMC’s factory in Arizona to celebrate the first Nvidia Blackwell chip produced in the US, an important step toward US AI chip self-sufficiency. He also noted that authentic Taiwanese food can now be found in Arizona.

And when I looked out into the audience, it was two-thirds Taiwanese and one-third American. The quality of Taiwanese food in Arizona has increased tremendously. You wanna get a bowl of beef noodle soup, you’re gonna do just fine. All these young families from Taiwan came to help us stand up our factories.

TSMC’s presence in Phoenix has brought authentic Taiwanese food to Arizona, from beef noodle soup and fried chicken to bubble tea and even stir-fried dishes. People there can now experience the true flavors of Taiwan.

Taiwanese tourists recount 7.5-magnitude Japan earthquake

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Japan on Monday night, off the coast of Aomori in the Tohoku Region. It could be felt throughout much of the region and even in some parts of Hokkaido to the north. Because it’s started snowing in the area, and because Japan has consistently been Taiwan’s top overseas travel destination, many Taiwanese were present during the earthquake. Fortunately, no casualties among them have been reported so far.

The floor started shaking while they’re having a night-time snack. The first response of these Taiwanese tourists, in the midst of chaos, was to hold the hotel room TV up to prevent it from toppling. When the shaking subsided, they then placed the TV screen gently on the floor, in case of aftershocks.

Hotel guests hurried downstairs via emergency stairs. The lobby was packed, and some guests even appeared to have run down barefooted.

The entire ceiling lamp shade fell off. It was shaking wildly for almost two minutes. Personally, it didn’t feel as strong as the 1999 Jiji earthquake, but it’s almost there. And later there was a persistent siren, which sounded like the type used for tsunami warnings. It lasted for up to 40 minutes. I asked the service desk downstairs, and they said we must move up if there’s a tsunami, so we kept running, all the way from the second floor to the 13th.

The earthquake off the coast of Aomori could be felt all over the Tohoku Region, where Aomori is located, and even in some parts of Hokkaido to the north. A tsunami warning was issued immediately after the earthquake hit.

A Taiwanese traveler on a business trip to Iwate Prefecture, south of Aomori, was still on a ship at sea when the sirens went off. The police evacuated the travelers to take shelter on higher grounds. Because the aftershocks persisted, travelers were forced to change their itineraries.

Currently, all trains to Aomori have been suspended. The railway company said it’s because there are fallen rocks on the tracks that need to be cleared. Train services will only resume once they finish cleaning up. We planned to visit Aomori, but now we’re taking a day trip to Morioka instead.

We sent a message in our Line chat group telling our customers not to worry, because the earthquake mainly affected areas off the coast. Even the tsunamis were only 1m-tall, so there’s really not much to worry about.

All of Taiwan’s five biggest travel agencies reported that their customers were not affected, and that they’ve offered alternatives to current and near-future travelers forced to change itineraries.
