British football fans bring Taiwan flags to match to upset China

2025-12-17

Football fans in the UK are turning to cross-strait politics to protest the downfall of a local team, the Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club was taken over by Chinese investors, and ever since, the team’s performance has steadily declined, losing all of their 16 matches this past season. Not wanting to see their beloved team relegated from the Premier League, fans are turning to Taiwan.

Fans were spotted holding up two Taiwan flags at a recent game, next to a sign that said, "Shi out," referring to the football club’s Chinese chairman, Jeff Shi. A Taiwanese traveler in the UK also happened to encounter Wolves supporters in the London Underground, who were more than willing to show off the Taiwan flag. The incident has stirred up debate online, with some saying that thanks to China’s "wolf-warrior diplomacy," even ordinary people are now aware that Taiwan is a sore spot they can use to provoke China.
