A rundown residential complex in Taipei’s affluent Da’an District has been compared to Hong Kong’s infamous urban slum, the Kowloon Walled City. Well, that comparison could soon come to an end, as change is on the horizon for the Xinwei Building. Ninety percent of the residents have given their consent to a government urban renewal project, which will see the building demolished and replaced with a new one.
The Xinwei building stands in stark contrast with the high-end apartments in the area. Inside, the space is as cramped as it gets. Each unit is only about 20 to 26 square meters, and residents put many of their belongings in common areas such as the corridor or stair-well. The structure’s age is beginning to show, with leaks everywhere. When it was built in 1971, the Xinwei building had 490 households living inside, and it housed a traditional market on its ground floor. But the bustle is long gone, and now residents’ safety is a top concern.
