Taiwan achieves +90% diagnosis and treatment rate for hepatitis C

Taiwan’s public health sector has reached a new milestone in preventing and treating hepatitis C. The country has met the World Health Organization’s standards for gold tier certification under a framework to eliminate the disease. The good news was announced at a press conference on Wednesday. At the event, President Lai Ching-te thanked Taiwan’s health officials, both present and former, for their hard work. Let’s hear more.

This year, Taiwan is set to set another milestone in the history of international public health. In our battle to eliminate hepatitis C, we have reached the targets set by the WHO five years ahead of the 2030 target, becoming leaders in Asia. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank health authorities in the central and local governments, medical institutions, civic organizations and all my fellow compatriots. It’s because of our united efforts that we could achieve this wonderful result.

It’s fantastic. It benefits our people and saves a great deal in medical costs. Drugs for hepatitis C are very expensive, but the disease can be cured. It’s all beneficial for everyone’s health, and to reduce medical expenditure.
Taiwan once had a significant number of hepatitis C patients, and the disease was the second-deadliest liver disease in the country. But Taiwan turned things around as it responded to a WHO campaign to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030. It established a designated agency for the cause in 2016 and launched precision public health policies focusing on prevention measures at the local level. The efforts have finally proven fruitful, resulting in a diagnosis and treatment rate of more than 90%.

台灣公共衛生領域，再創輝煌成就，我國成功提前在今年達成WHO所設定的，消除C型肝炎目標，為全球肝炎防治樹立了新典範，衛福部今(17)舉辦國際記者會，向世界宣告這重大成果，總統賴清德總統親自到場，致詞更不忘感謝過去歷任衛福部長的努力，再次立下新的里程碑。

過去台灣有不少C肝患者，是國人肝病的第二號兇手，台灣積極回應世界衛生組織全球2030，消除病毒性肝炎的號召，2016年成立國家消除C肝辦公室，陸續推出精準公衛防治、防治在地化的核心策略，如今這些努力，終於有好結果，台灣C肝診斷率、治療率，都超過9成。
