Mother of stabbing victim declines monetary donations

The mother of one of the three victims that were killed in last week’s stabbing is calling for compassion toward the parent’s of the attacker. Her 57-year-old son, Yu Chia-chang, died trying to stop the perpetrator at Taipei Main Station. Though his death has been difficult to accept, she is proud of her son’s actions. Let’s hear from her.

I feel such an honor for my son. I would like to thank everyone, thank everyone in this country. I hope that everyone can also give the perpetrator’s parents some comfort. What their son did has nothing to do with them. He may have been under some form of mental distress at the time, which ended up resulting in this. Wasn’t it a similar case with the perpetrator of the 2014 Metro attack? And in that case the perpetrator wasn’t as scary as this time round.
Yu’s actions have inspired many to donate to his family. Among them is Hong Kong actor Chapman To, who resides in Taiwan. But Yu’s mother has declined the donations, saying that their family was fine financially. She simply says she hopes her son will be recognized at the Martyrs’ Shrine. The Taoyuan City Government has stated it will make arrangements for that, and apply for a commendation order from the central government for Yu.

北捷攻擊事件震驚全台，其中，57歲余家昶見義勇為不幸喪命，讓高齡老母無法接受，不過她今天(23日)透過鏡頭，公開呼籲，事情是張文做的，跟他的父母無關。

“為我兒子很光榮，我感謝大家，感謝全國的人。我但願我們全國各界，給他(張文)爸爸媽媽有一個安慰，事情是他兒子做的，跟他爸爸媽媽沒有關係。他(張文)可能就是有一種什麼心裡不舒服的時候，他才發生這樣子的事情，以前鄭捷還不是這樣子嗎？鄭捷還沒有那麼恐怖，他(張文)比鄭捷恐怖。”
在台定居的港星杜汶澤，想捐款給余家人，余媽媽以’’家境尚可，婉拒捐款’’。她希望兒子見義勇為事蹟，可以入忠烈祠，桃園市府表示，將安排余家昶入祀桃園忠烈祠，同步向中央申請褒揚令。
