University hosts cooking competition between student and robot

2025-12-23

Could an artificially intelligent robot cook better food than a trained chef? Hungkuang University in Taichung recently sought to answer this question, hosting a competition between a real chef and an AI chef. They prepared the same dish, and a panel of 13 judges voted for their favorite. Let’s take a look at the result.

A chef cooks at one side of the table, as steam rises from a machine on the other. On the right, a second-year culinary student adds ingredients and stir-fries the dish by hand. On the left, a smart machine is running the show, advising what ingredient to put in next.

Wu Sung-lien
Culinary arts department director
The results come from the students’ technical background, their sense of taste, and their on-the-spot responses.

Liang Hao-min
Smart device maker
A machine would definitely be better than humans at heat control and overall mixing speed.

Two Hakka-style stir-fries are ready to be served. They look pretty much the same, but 13 students judged their taste.

The meat made by the AI is tougher, and the student’s is tenderer.

I voted for the AI dish because its flavor suits my taste better.

The competition was neck and neck. It all came down to the last few votes.

Number two is AI.

The AI’s spiciness was more to my liking.

I like a stronger flavor, so I voted for the one done by hand.

I thought that the AI’s squid was a little tenderer.

Hungkuang University hosted this competition between a student chef and an AI chef. In the end, the AI chef secured a narrow victory, winning by seven votes to six.

Su Hung-yi
Hungkuang University president
Collaboration is very important. How can we pair machines well with humans? AI has the advantage of being very precise and fast, but it lacks the sense of human-to-human interaction.

In the first half of this year, the restaurant and hospitality industry had the highest job vacancy rate, according to data from the Ministry of Labor. To handle the staffing shortage, 17% of restaurants have started using robots as servers. As this competition shows, AI in addition to making up for a lack of servers could even take the place of chefs.
