Mayday ended its concert tour with a bang in Taichung, with a spectacle that got fans in tears from laughter. There were moments of lighthearted humor as Ashin performed “Party Animal” next to a fan dressed up in monk attire in the crowd. But the real knee-slapping moments came later during the song-request segment. Ashin teased the fans multiple times with a playful banter that got the entire arena roaring.

Even monks can’t resist the groove of “Party Animal.” Shaking to the beat and bowing along, vocalist Ashin belted out with his hands clasped together. The concert kicked off with an explosive high, but the best part was the interactions with fans.

- We’re right here, why don’t you look at us?
- I want to look, but Ashin is right in front of me!

On one side, Ashin, on the other, Masa. Pick one! Ashin asked the fans to come forward, and as they professed their love for him, he made a cheeky remark.

- Last year in Hong Kong, we watched you from a footbridge!
Her mother had just passed away.
So we watched you from afar.
- So the reason you were on the footbridge is you didn’t buy tickets!

The arena erupted into laughs, so much that they couldn’t speak. But Masa was back on business, waiting for the two fans to finally request a song. But… it didn’t quite go to plan.

- What’s your name?
- I love you. I love you the most!
- What’s your name!
- I love you so much!
- Wait! Let me speak!

The fan was too busy obsessing over her idol, but it all came together as the band and fans sang along to “Nobody Else in My Heart.”

Ashin got the fans to hold hands as they sang, but once they let go, the music stopped, at just the wrong lyric, sounding like an obscenity and getting the crowd crying with laughter.

Excavation team begins work on Matai’an barrier lake dam

The Matai’an River barrier lake that burst in September 2025 flooding Guangfu Township is deep in the mountains with no access roads. After slowly paving a temporary road up the river valley last month, excavation teams have finally arrived at the lake. They’ve now begun to clean and dredge the overflow channel and reduce the size of the dam, allowing the lake to drain and eventually restoring the river to its original flow.

Deep in a mountain valley, excavators move carefully in the fast-flowing Matai’an River. This is the river that flooded Hualien’s Guangfu Township in September 2025 when a barrier lake upstream burst. Now work has finally begun to restore the river to its original flow.

On December 3, we started working with the excavation team that dealt with the Liwu River barrier lake, hiring them to see if they could slowly make their way up the river.

The Matai’an River barrier lake is deep in the mountains with no access roads, so the excavation team had to slowly work their way up the valley, carving out a temporary path. On December 15 there was a sudden landslide that buried several pieces of machinery, but thankfully all the operators were unharmed. After a challenging journey, the team has finally reached the barrier lake and begun their work.

They set up a safe operation platform at the top of the dam. We hope that they can excavate the overflow channel, so that the barrier lake, which still has about 300,000 tonnes of water, can flow down the original river channel.

The excavation team will try and lower the dam, drain the barrier lake, and restore the river to its original flow.

We originally estimated that the excavation project would take 50 days, but maybe it’ll be faster now that they’ve reached the dam. But the river’s situation up there is worse than we imagined, so we might need to spend a few more days to seriously consider it.

The biggest challenges for the project moving forward are the unstable slope on the river’s left bank and the 200 million cubic meters of soil and sand that remain in the river channel. The team will do their best to expedite the process, restoring the river and eliminating the danger posed by the barrier lake.

Picasso’s immersive exhibition held till April 6

Taiwan’s first immersive Pablo Picasso exhibition is now underway in Taipei, showcasing the artist’s masterpieces through captivating light and shadow projections. Among the highlights is Guernica, Picasso’s anti-war masterpiece. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look!

Taiwan’s first Picasso immersive exhibition features a total of seven exhibition areas. One area highlights reproductions of the artist’s most celebrated works, tracing the evolution of his color language—blue tones evoking solitude, warm pinks, reds, and earthy hues expressing joy, and Cubism’s signature geometric forms drawn in muted browns, grays, and ochres.

Another centerpiece is in the third exhibition room, dedicated to Guernica, Picasso’s powerful anti-war masterpiece.

This time, another major highlight of the exhibition is that we’ve brought Picasso’s anti-war masterpiece Guernica to Taiwan. In past exhibitions, due to space limitations or authorization issues, this painting was rarely showcased. Yet Guernica is one of the most renowned works worldwide after World War II. To complete it, Picasso first created 42 preparatory sketches, then collected the best parts and put them into this grand composition. Visitors will be able to see how he built the entire work step by step. With the aid of the latest technology, the painting is brought to life in dynamic form. Picasso’s creative journey was highly diverse: we know of his Blue Period, his Rose Period, and later his Surrealist phase. What we usually see is only the surface, but I believe Picasso was truly unique—he remained faithful to himself, constantly experimenting and surpassing his own limits, which is why he could produce such a wide range of works. If you explore the background of his creations more deeply, and even learn about his way of life, you’ll discover that he was fascinating, not a cold, and hard to understand person.

Seven women who profoundly shaped Picasso’s life are highlighted in another section. Through photographs and paintings, visitors discover how each figure influenced his artistic journey across different periods.

Enhanced by high-quality reproductions, dynamic light-and-shadow projections, iconic quotes, animation, and music, the exhibition is an immersive experience—bringing Picasso’s creations to life.

From his paintings, we can see how Picasso placed violence alongside love, war alongside peace, and cruelty alongside hope. His work is incredibly diverse, and I believe audiences may not always fully understand it. That’s why this exhibition adopts a different approach—presenting his art from new angles and through varied curatorial methods—so visitors can better understand Picasso and recognize his wide-ranging influence on modern art. By combining dynamic and static elements, the exhibition aims to give audiences a truly distinctive experience.

The exhibit will be held at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall until April 6.

President Lai receives delegation from European Parliament

China’s military drills around Taiwan have led to growing international support for Taiwan. President Lai Ching-te received on Tuesday received a delegation of eight members of the European Parliament at the Presidential Office. It was led by the chair of the European Parliament’s Taiwan Friendship Group Michael Gahler, who openly condemned China’s provocative military exercises. Let’s hear more.

Mr. Gahler is an old friend of Taiwan, with this being his fifth visit. Thank you for bringing new friends with you on this trip. In facing the long-term hybrid challenges posed by authoritarian China including military threats, gray zone harassment and diplomatic and economic coercion, Taiwan has come to an extremely profound understanding. Firstly such challenges have proven once again the importance of peace through strength. And perhaps more importantly they have confirmed the need for nations to come together to resist authoritarian expansionism, safeguard freedom and democracy, and uphold the rules-based international order.

We are strongly criticized the latest belligerent and aggressive posture that Mainland China has practiced a week ago around Taiwan. It is such provocation and unacceptable attitude that endangers the peaceful coexistence across the strait. The Taiwan Strait is an international strait and it’s good that different countries demonstrate that also by sending ships through this strait and making it clear that we do not accept a unilateral change of the status quo.

The president emphasized that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are not only vital to Indo-Pacific security, but also to European security and global economic prosperity. He said Taiwan is ready to work hand in hand with the European Parliament and its members to turn bilateral exchanges into concrete actions to build a democratic supply chain.

Nvidia announces latest innovations in CES keynote

It’s a new year, and the world’s largest consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, known as CES, is back! Excitement is in the air as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced his company’s latest innovations. From self-driving AI systems to humanoid robots, let’s see what the industry leader has in store.

He’s back again with his signature black leather jacket, only quietly updated in glossy crocodile print-embossed patent leather. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang re-wore this piece to open CES 2026 in Las Vegas.

People ask “Where’s the money coming from?” That’s where the money’s coming from. The modernization of AI to AI, the shifting of R&D budgets from classical methods to now, artificial intelligence methods.

Huang made a splash with the look, but that’s only for starters. Other highlights that may catch the eye of Taiwanese include a bird’s eye view of the Taipei 101 and the many Taiwanese firms at the front row seat, demonstrating the country’s weight in the industry.

This car just got rated. It just got into production. The Mercedes-Benz CLA was just rated by NCAAP, the world’s safest car. It is the only system that I know that has—every single line of the code, the chip, the system, every line of code safety certified. The entire model system is based on a—sensors are diverse and redundant, and so is the self-driving car stack.

One of the most exciting new techs from Nvidia is an AI system for self-driving cars. Another are humanoid robots.

The robots showcased on stage bear a striking resemblance to the movie character WALL-E. They responded to Huang’s commands swiftly. There’s also an entire army of robots of different shapes and sizes shown in the presentation slide.
