DPP’s US-Taiwan partnership sharply contrasts with KMT-CCP exchanges: Lai

President Lai Ching-te on Tuesday morning chaired a press conference on the sixth US-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue, held last Tuesday in Washington, DC. During the meeting, representatives for Taiwan and the US signed a joint statement on the Pax Silica Declaration and US-Taiwan Cooperation on Economic Security. Lai said this result sharply contrasts with the ongoing think tank exchanges between the KMT and Beijing, and that it’s up for the people to decide whether closer ties with the US or China is more advantageous for Taiwan.

This is the first time for our two sides to hold talks face-to-face since the inaugural Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue in 2020. The dialogue this time focused on strategic partnership for supply chain security, third-country cooperation on critical minerals and four pillars of bilateral cooperation.
Representatives for Taiwan and the US signed a joint statement on the Pax Silica Declaration and US-Taiwan Cooperation on Economic Security during the meeting, to continue deepening bilateral economic cooperation. Meanwhile, the opposition KMT is now holding think tank exchanges with Beijing counterparts, which critics see as a direct challenge to the ruling DPP’s policy direction.

The press conference today isn’t aimed at the KMT’s exchanges with the CCP at the moment. Rather, it’s to demonstrate a contrast, so that the people can see clearly for themselves, whether the DPP administration’s efforts—joining hands with the US and allies and becoming more internationalized—whether this economic strategy is more beneficial to Taiwan, or whether the opposition’s efforts for a second “Westward Movement” is more beneficial for Taiwan’s economic development.
National defense is also an indispensable part to US-Taiwan relations, as clearly demonstrated in an X post made by US Senator Roger Wicker, who also chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee. Speaking of the opposition’s blocking of the Executive Yuan’s special defense budget bill, Wicker wrote that he’s “disappointed to see Taiwan’s opposition parties in parliament slash President Lai’s defense budget so dramatically.” He also urged Taiwan’s lawmakers to reconsider, “especially with rising Chinese threats.” President Lai concurs.

Oversight is the legislature’s responsibility. It has a duty to review the central government’s general budget. But speaking of the special defense budget, especially in the face of Chinese threats, they simply cannot refuse to review the central government’s general budget, nor can they refuse to review the special defense budget. Only conducting KMT-CCP cooperation is dangerous to Taiwan.
Lai again urges the opposition to approve the general budget and the original special defense budget.

總統賴清德週二上午率行政團隊，就川普第二任首次台美經濟繁榮夥伴對話開記者會，強調對話成果豐碩，未來台美將持續深化經貿合作。對照國民黨剛好也率團訪問中國還合開智庫論壇，賴總統強調並非針對國共交流，但正好可以給國人比較，是要攜手友盟走進世界，還是再度西進中國。
第六屆台美經濟繁榮夥伴對話，上週圓滿落幕，總統賴清德偕副總統蕭美琴，與經濟部、外交部等部會首長召開記者會，說明對話成果。

“2020年首屆EPPD以來，雙方主談人首度實體面對面對談。主要聚焦在供應鏈安全的戰略對接、關鍵礦物合作第三國合作，以及雙邊合作四大支柱。”
台美會後簽署「矽盛世宣言聯合聲明」，持續深化與美方合作。而同一時間國民黨重啟國共論壇，由副主席蕭旭岑率團去中國，一起開智庫論壇，外界好奇是不是要隔空較勁?

“今天召開記者會並不是針對國民黨，進行國共交流而開，但是剛好可以提供對比，讓國人做一個清楚的辨識，到底是民進黨政府目前所推動的，攜手美國攜手友盟走進國際，這個經濟戰略對台灣比較有利，還是在野黨所推動的二次西進，對台灣的經濟發展比較有利。”
經濟發展重要，強化國防更不可或缺，國民黨團10度封殺政院版國防特別條例，美國參院軍委會主席韋克爾在社群發文點名藍白，稱對台灣反對黨在國會大幅削減賴總統的國防預算，感到失望，呼籲台灣國會應重新考慮，尤其是面對日益增長的中國威脅，賴總統也有話要說。

“監督是國會的責任，他也有義務去審查中央政府總預算。（審查）國防特別預算，特別是在面對中國威脅的時候，不能夠不審中央政府總預算，也不能夠不審國防特別預算。只進行國共的合作，這對台灣來講是危險的。”
喊話再喊話，盼在野正視國防重要性，盡速審議特別條例與總預算。
