A public memorial was held on Tuesday for Chan Neng-chieh, a firefighting hero who lost his life during a rescue mission on Jan. 21. The Keelung firefighter took off his oxygen mask and gave it to a civilian during the mission, a move that ultimately cost him his life in the line of duty. The ceremony was filled with emotional moments, including a playful scolding from a friend of Chan’s who was born on the same year, month and day as him. The friend told him off one last time in his eulogy, saying he had left him behind to save others. Let’s hear more.

Before the service, the hearse procession arrived at the Ren’ai Firefigthing Unit, where Chan had served. His colleagues, standing in formation, were unable to hold back their tears to bid the hero farewell. Chan’s equipment from his firefighting days remains at the station, including his smoke-stained helmet. Though he is no longer there, his spirit of self-sacrifice in saving lives has been awarded a posthumous presidential commendation. The Keelung City Government also posthumously promoted Chan to unit captain and has made arrangements for him to be enshrined at the Martyr’s Shrine in the city.

TSMC’s Advanced Packaging Plant No. 7 in Chiayi set to become world’s largest

TSMC’s plans to expand in the US have divided public opinion, but it’s worth noting that the company’s investments in Taiwan are not decreasing. Today we’ll give you an inside look at construction of TSMC’s Advanced Packaging Plant No. 7 in Chiayi, revealed to the public for the first time. It’s expected to become the world’s largest advanced wafer packaging base in the future.

As we approach Chiayi’s High Speed Rail station, we can see huge factories and large-scale machinery towering over sugarcane fields in the distance. This is TSMC’s most advanced packaging plant, No. 7. Chiayi’s sugarcane fields are turning into fields of silicon.

Workers carefully operate a forklift. The first phase of the plant’s construction began equipment installation last month. The second phase is still under construction. The two plants will have a total cleanroom area of 110,000 square meters, which is larger than 16 football fields. In the future, they are estimated to create 2,500 direct high-tech jobs.

Nvidia CEO upgrades car to Maybach ultra-luxury SUV

During his recent visit to Taiwan, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang upgraded his private car from a Mercedes-Benz S-Class to a Mercedes-Maybach GLS600, an ultra-luxury SUV worth millions of New Taiwan dollars. The change to this understated but opulent car sparked discussion online, with some netizens joking that for Huang, who can “earn a car every few minutes,” driving a Maybach is quite frugal.

Adult children ‘rescue’ 102-yo father after shocking marriage to caregiver

Remember the surprise marriage between a 102-year-old man and his live-in caretaker? Back in January, the nine children of Mr. Wang were shocked to learn of the marriage, when Ms. Lai, their surprise stepmother, barred them from visiting their dad in central Taipei. At the time, the Wangs had applied for guardianship of their elderly father, but before the court had made a decision, Ms. Lai and her employer registered their marriage, which authorities deemed legitimate. Mr. Wang’s children believe that Lai was after their father’s massive fortune and had taken advantage of him. They even accused her of confining him to his home. On Tuesday afternoon, they took the opportunity of a hospital visit to take their father away from the unwanted stepmother. Let’s find out more in our exclusive report.

The man on the wheelchair is Mr. Wang, who’s 102 years old. He’s just visited the doctor accompanied by Ms. Lai, his caregiver—and wife since the beginning of the year. He’s ferried out by a small crowd as soon as he exits. Ms. Lai screams.

Police arrives soon amid the scuffle. The caregiver seems to have sustained injuries and is sent to ER.

Turns out, the small crowd waiting outside the hospital to fetch Mr. Wang is his children and grandchildren. It’s their now or never moment to get the elderly man back under their hood. The Wangs were in for a shock when the youngest son found out in January that the elder Mr. Wang got married to his caregiver of 17 years without their knowledge. They believe Ms. Lai was after their father’s massive fortune, and are now accusing her of confining him in his apartment: the children say Ms. Lai had blocked all forms of contact they could possibly have with their father, from phone calls to physical visits. They even got the police involved last month, but to no avail, which is why they’ve decided to get him in person.

The family finally gets their father onto the car with them. They’re relieved that he’s back in person.

First Chinese marriage migrant lawmaker assumes office amid controversy

The TPP on Tuesday inaugurated six new lawmakers-at-large for the Legislative Yuan. That’s because the party has a policy in which legislators elected through the party list serve only a two year term, after which they give up their spots for those next in line on the list. That means that the first batch of lawmakers, which included Party Chair Huang Kuo-chang is out, and another six are in. Among the new ones is Lee Zhen-hsiu, who has garnered some controversy due to her Chinese nationality. Lee is the first Chinese marriage migrant to ever become a lawmaker in Taiwan, due to a legal gap between cross-strait laws and the National Act. On Tuesday, she showed plane tickets to prove to the public that she had gone back to China to give up her Chinese nationality. But she says that local authorities would not accept her application. I went back to my birthplace, Hengnan County, and I told the relevant authorities there that I wanted to apply to renounce my nationality. But they wouldn’t do it. As of the present day, there haven’t been any mainland Chinese spouses who have been able to actually give up their PRC nationality after obtaining a Taiwanese ID card. They provided a document written in simplified Chinese, which I will forward to the Ministry of the Interior, so that they can figure out how to renounce PRC nationality.

Many countries’ constitutions do not allow citizens to renounce their nationality. That being the case, people from those countries would not be able to hold public office here in accordance with the Nationality Act. Our legislation is not directed solely at spouses from mainland China, it applies to every country equally.

The Mainland Affairs Council said that all foreign marriage migrants, no matter their origin, were considered one and the same when it comes to holding public office in Taiwan. Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior has requested Lee to provide proof that she applied to renounce her PRC nationality before she took office. Under the relevant provisions of the Nationality Act, she has one year to submit the relevant documents. If she fails to do so, she will be dismissed from her position.

Free-roaming cows feast on strawberry farmer’s hard work

The owner of a strawberry farm in Hsinchu posted heartbreaking story online, saying that the strawberries in his orchard had been eaten and trampled for several months. But the culprit of the ransacking turns out not to be humans, but free-roaming cows raised by a nearby resident. He initially reported the situation to the relevant authorities, but the compensation he received didn’t even cover his costs. But what’s even more infuriating this time around, is that the cattle owner directly denied responsibility, claiming the cows had all been at a local river. The Animal Protection Office stated that if it is confirmed to be negligence on the part of the cattle owner, fines will be imposed according to the law.

Cows strut into the strawberry orchard and munch on the plants for an extra post-dinner bite. But these snacks come at the expense of farmer’s hard work.

DPP’s US-Taiwan partnership sharply contrasts with KMT-CCP exchanges: Lai

President Lai Ching-te on Tuesday morning chaired a press conference on the sixth US-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue, held last Tuesday in Washington, DC. During the meeting, representatives for Taiwan and the US signed a joint statement on the Pax Silica Declaration and US-Taiwan Cooperation on Economic Security.
