Free-roaming cows feast on strawberry farmer’s hard work

Free-roaming cows feast on strawberry farmer’s hard work

2026-02-03

The owner of a strawberry farm in Hsinchu posted heartbreaking story online, saying that the strawberries in his orchard had been eaten and trampled for several months. But the culprit of the ransacking turns out not to be humans, but free-roaming cows raised by a nearby resident. He initially reported the situation to the relevant authorities, but the compensation he received didn’t even cover his costs. But what’s even more infuriating this time around, is that the cattle owner directly denied responsibility, claiming the cows had all been at a local river. The Animal Protection Office stated that if it is confirmed to be negligence on the part of the cattle owner, fines will be imposed according to the law.

Cows strut into the strawberry orchard and munch on the plants for an extra post-dinner bite. But these snacks come at the expense of farmer’s hard work.

Farmer
Strawberry orchard
It happened in 2024 and in 2025. Now it’s 2026 and there’s been zero improvement.

Other orchards in the area also got ransacked.

Mr. Chiang
Vegetable farmer
They ate half the leaves, so I can’t keep planting them. There’s nothing I can do. They keep coming over all the time.

The veggies were left with broken leaves, and the ground trodden with hoof prints. Very incriminating evidence. The issue was reported to authorities, but compensation offered didn’t cover the cost of the damages. The village chief is now stepping in, after the owner of the cattle claimed his cows were at the riverside during the latest intrusion.

Yen Sheng-jen
Shiguang Village Chief
He lets them roam freely, without a fence, and without tying them up. Agriculture and animal protection officials have come, but there are no laws that cover this.

Ho Chih-feng
Animal protection official
If our investigations confirm that the owner failed to fulfill his responsibilities, the office will impose penalties in accordance with the Animal Protection Act.

Cows will eat any lush grass they see. But of course, it’s not their fault. Their owner has sparked anger in the area, and many farmers are wondering what the last straw will be.
