Famous for its fresh fruit, a shaved ice shop in Tainan is offering a strawberry shaved ice for the winter season. The shop doesn’t open until midday, but people line up at 8am to get a number and make sure they get to try it. Some tourists come too late and miss their chance to enjoy some of the best shaved ice in the nation.

These farm-fresh strawberries are washed and cut, then carefully arranged on top of shaved ice. They’re topped with strawberry sauce and condensed milk, and a traditional pudding is the cherry on top. A famous shaved ice shop in Tainan offers this extravagant strawberry flavor for its winter season, a must-try for anyone who loves fresh strawberries. The shop doesn’t open until midday, but it always sells out early.

剛到貨的新鮮草莓，一顆顆清洗乾淨，切掉蒂頭，擺滿了一整盤，淋上特製的草莓醬和牛奶煉乳，上頭還可以擺上一顆古早味的布丁，這就是台南最強排隊名店，老字號冰店的，冬季限定草莓牛乳冰。有人看上它的浮誇，有人鍾愛新鮮草莓的滋味，店家中午才營業，不過每天一早官網總是提前宣布，今日完售。

其實目前草莓價格還在高點，預計得農曆年後更實惠。

Taipei’s highest rent in 2025 was not in the city’s East District or Ximen area, but a gym in Beitou. At over 3,500 square meters large, the gym’s monthly rent was NT$1 million. At over 1,100 ping large, or about 3,600 square meters, the monthly rent for this gym in Beitou is NT$1 million, making it the most expensive rental in Taipei last year. Although the overall rent is high, the amount per ping is less than NT$900.

We’re very optimistic about the future. Fubon Bank, Huaku, and Nvidia are coming to the Beitou Shilin Technology Park in the future, and that’s only a five- to ten-minute drive, so it will benefit us a lot.

The technology park close by has driven up rental prices in the area, but it’s still cheaper than Taipei’s East District in terms of price per area.

In prime commercial districts, the rent per ping might still be around NT$10,000 to NT$20,000. This means that the total rent could be, say, under NT$100,000 or just above that, which is still within the range that small-scale shops can afford. However, for larger spaces, the total rent tends to show a different, polarized trend.

With the rise of e-commerce and landlords’ unwillingness to compromise, physical storefronts in Taipei’s prime locations are unaffordable, while less desirable spots remain vacant. It’s no wonder the East District has so many storefronts up for rent.

Kaohsiung shopping area covered in excessive graffiti

There are beautiful painted murals along the walls of Kaohsiung’s Yuzhu Shopping District, which tourists often photograph. But now graffiti in the area has spread from the walls to road signs, windows, and mirrors. The local village chief says it has been like this for a while, but new graffiti appears every so often, and it’s hard to know who’s responsible.

Graffiti spreads beyond the walls here, covering up windows with layers of painted images and words. It gives this once-quiet alley a very different atmosphere.

This was once a beautifully painted alley, with murals like this lotus pond. But now, not only are the walls covered in graffiti, but even the road signs have been vandalized.

The black-and-white graffiti covering this road sign makes it hard to read. At the alley entrance, the back of a notice sign and even a traffic mirror have also been vandalized. This is in Kaohsiung’s Yuzhu Shopping District, which many young people and students frequent for its affordable clothing. The local village chief says they originally commissioned a young artist to paint murals, but then graffiti gradually started appearing.

It’s hard to know when they come and go. They’re good at this. They paint and then run off. This has happened many times, for a long while. There’s still new graffiti happening all the time. It’s hard to catch them. They might not be from around here.

Stamps commemorating Little League world champions issued

The baseball team from Taipei’s Dong Yuan Elementary School were champions of last year’s Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. To commemorate their victory and carry on Taiwan’s legacy of little league excellence, Chunghwa Post issued a special stamp for the team.

Taiwan and US sign reciprocal trade agreement

After many months of negotiations, Taiwan and the US have finally signed a reciprocal trade agreement. US tariffs on Taiwanese goods will be capped at 15%, Taiwan’s semiconductors and related products will be granted the most favorable treatment under Section 232 of the US’ Trade Expansion Act. A total of 2,072 Taiwanese goods amounting to early US$10 billion will be exempt from tariffs. Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun has said that, originally, the US had hoped the tariff rates would take effect after approval from the Legislative Yuan. But Taiwan’s negotiating team managed to chance the process so that they take effect once procedural steps are completed. Still, Cheng urged the Legislature to review the agreement as soon as possible. Let’s hear from her.

We secured a non-cumulative reciprocal tariff rate of 15%. If we factor the exempted items, the average tariff rate on Taiwan exports is just about 12.33%. That’s a total reduction of 23.45% from our two stages of negotiations. At one point, the US had requested that the tariff rates take effect after the agreement cleared the Legislative Yuan. But thanks to our efforts, the US agreed to implement them quickly, following its domestic administrative procedures. The rates will take effect once the agreement is published in the Federal Register.

From the Taiwan side, it’s Vice Premier Cheng, Minister Without Portfolio Yang Jen-ni and Taiwan’s representative to the US Alexander Yui. The key takeaway is that tariffs on Taiwanese goods have been reduced from 20% to 15%, putting Taiwan on par with other Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea. For key industries like the chip making industry, the pressure has eased for now.

Lai holds press conference on signing of US trade agreement

On Friday, President Lai Ching-te held a press conference to share the outcome of the reciprocal trade agreement between Taiwan and the US. Lai said the signing of the agreement marks a new chapter for Taiwan’s economy and industry. He also directed words at the opposition-controlled Legislative Yuan, urging lawmakers to pass the bill as quickly as possible.

The completion of this last step I believe will ease the worries that Taiwanese society has been having since April 2 last year. Lai says the achievement of six key objectives and five historic breakthroughs will become a driving force for Taiwan’s economy. He also had some words for the opposition.

Industry leaders and the international community have welcomed and affirmed the outcome of the negotiations. My hope is that ruling and opposition parties will work together to review and pass the agreement as soon as possible and allow all sectors of Taiwan’s industry to start a new chapter. The agreement includes a stipulation that Taiwan’s national defense budget must account for at least 3% of GDP. Critics say the article is akin to allowing a third country, the US, to get involved in Taiwan’s fiscal expenditures.

Our goal is for our defense spending to surpass 3% of GDP. I had made that declaration before the US announced its reciprocal tariffs. So whether Taiwan’s defense spending reaches 3% or 5% of GDP has nothing to do with these negotiations. In any case, our 2026 defense budget already exceeds 3% of GDP. It’s already reality. So there won’t be any issues regarding implementation.

Lai also announced that the Presidential Office will establish a dedicated committee for steering Taiwan’s economic strategy, convened by Lai himself. By integrating resources from the Executive Yuan, the committee will lay out a new framework for Taiwan-US trade, in a bid to elevate Taiwan’s economy to new heights.

Pig stars in Sanxia squabble after leaping from slaughterhouse truck

A farm pig went on a thrilling trip in the city in New Taipei, after leaping and escaping from a truck that was headed to the slaughterhouse. At first the pig didn’t know what to do and almost got run over by a vehicle, but it gradually found its footing and ended up finding a pleasant place to chow down on weeds. Police were dispatched to the site to keep the pig under watch, but it wasn’t all smooth. Though at first things seemed to be going well, the pig ended bolting free once again, resulting in a funny squabble.

They try to stop the pig from breaking free and reach for a thicker rope.

They moved fencing pieces to block the pig’s line of sight, leaving it nowhere to run.

It was the first time for the officers to capture a pig, just as if it were a suspect. Pinning it down took considerable effort, but it all worked out.

The incident took place in Sanxia, at the Beida Special District in New Taipei. It is thought that the pig wasn’t secured properly on the truck, causing it to fall to the ground. It was initially calm, roaming leisurely and munching on weeds. But it suddenly bolted and ran amok, nearly getting run over.

- It was a pig for slaughter. It fell of the truck onto the middle of the road, and it almost got run over. I shooed it to the pavement.

New Taipei City’s Animal Protection Office says it seems that inadequate safety measures during transport led to the pig’s escape. As such, a fine of up to NT$15,000 may be imposed in accordance with the Animal Protection Act.

Kenting authorities to apply new methodology to gather visitor stats

Pingtung authorities have come out in a response to a recent report claiming that Kenting is seeing sharply declining visitors. A county government official says the sharp decline can be largely attributed to its use of outdated statistics methodology. He says current statistics reflect the number of tickets sold at Kenting National Park and the number of cars parked, and therefore is far from reality. As remedy, the national park authorities plan to adopt a new big data-based method.

Even though it’s winter, surfers still flock to Kenting’s beaches. There are also families with kids playing on the sand.

- It’s pretty cheap to rent a beach umbrella. Just 400 to 500 bucks can get you through the day.

That said, winter is still off-peak season for Kenting tourism. A recent report stated that the number of visitors to Kenting has plummeted in recent years, leading to wide discussions. Some say domestic travel is on a downward trend, while others say it’s because young travelers no longer visit. But authorities say one must consider the methodology before drawing conclusions.

Kenting National Park’s statistics came from the number of tickets sold at each site, as well as parking. One must also consider taking the locations into account. Emerging and newly popular attractions aren’t factored in, so our current stats don’t necessarily reflect the whole picture or keep up with the times.

The Kenting National Park administration team gets their numbers from tickets sold at attraction sites and parking statistics. These datasets may no longer reflect reality. That’s because many visitors now opt for other activities instead, such as water sports, private tours, nightlife and stargazing. The stats don’t include these numbers.

We did the beach, the aquarium, and the main street of Kenting.
