Kaohsiung self-serve buffet charges NT$250 for standard meal

People in Tainan are raving about a NT$90 chicken bento box that has a chicken cutlet bigger than most people’s faces and wider than the container it comes in. But not all meals are so affordable. At one Taiwanese-style buffet in Kaohsiung, people pay NT$250 for a simple meal with four different vegetables and one serving of protein, almost becoming unaffordable.

With all these vegetables, eggs, and different kinds of meat, it’s no wonder people enjoy Taiwanese-style buffets like this one. But the price of one such restaurant in Kaohsiung’s Lingya District shocked customers.

This meal includes eggplant, tofu, spinach, scrambled egg with tomato, sweet and sour pork, and rice. But the customer complained he could barely afford it, as it cost NT$250.

When our reporter went to try and chose similar dishes, the final cost was NT$195.

If people think it’s unfair they can tell us on the spot. If we miscalculated or something, we would admit our mistake and calculate it again right away.

The restaurant said that at the start of this year they implemented an electronic calculation system to prevent customers from disputing prices. The amount of food and sauce people add can all impact the final price.

Meanwhile in Tainan, people are raving about a restaurant that offers a meal complete with vegetables and a massive chicken cutlet even wider than the box it comes in. People say eating here is a really good deal.

高雄自助餐"4菜1肉"高達250元民眾:快要吃不起

台南有民眾大推，90元雞排飯，雞排不只比臉還大，還比便當盒寬，但不是每家自助餐都這麼划算，高雄有民眾到自助餐店買便當，四樣菜、3.4塊糖醋肉，最後結帳高達250元，民眾自嘲，自助餐快變成他吃不起的樣子。

青菜、炒蛋、肉品，各式各樣菜色相當豐富，許多民眾愛吃自助餐，但有人在高雄苓雅區一家自助餐店買便當，結帳時被價格嚇一跳。

裡頭包含茄子、芹菜豆干、菠菜、番茄炒蛋、糖醋肉和白飯，最後結帳居然高達250元，民眾發文自嘲，自助餐店變成吃不起的樣子了。

“最主要是看你買的是什麼東西，因為他裡面分成蔬菜，紅區跟綠區，就還好ok。”

但記者回到現場，實際夾了類似菜色，最後結帳是195元。

“當事者覺得不公平的話，要現場跟我們講，是不是我們計算錯誤，還是怎樣的話，我們自己會認錯，會當場會再算一次。”

價格為何有落差，店家解釋，為了避免消費爭議，今年初開始，改成電子化秤重計費，所以民眾夾的份量跟湯湯水水，都可能會影響價格。

不過這家在台南的便當店，則是被讚買到賺到，除了便當基本菜色外，主打"比臉大"雞排，便當比整個便當盒還要寬，打開便當幾乎裝部下大雞排根本塞不進去，讓民眾大讚，CP值很高。

Most middle-school students are still learning and having fun, but one student in Kaohsiung has already started making money. Music student Teabat is earning money by drawing. She started drawing in fifth grade and now takes professional cases online. She can create characters from scratch, draw storyboards, and even make short cartoons.

Holding a stylus and drawing on a board connected to her phone, Teabat draws Ultraman in just a few minutes. For this middle-school student, copying known characters is easy. She even designs her own characters.

Teabat’s perseverance has earned her sister’s admiration. She may only be in middle school, but she’s already supporting herself. She saved up enough money to buy this drawing board, which she uses to create all kinds of characters. People even ask her to make products with them, like phone cases and clothes.

Most of them are stickers or other products. Storyboards make more money, but also take more time. I usually spend 30 to 40 hours on a storyboard and earn NT$500 per page.

Kindergarten teacher brings children joy as face painter

Once a full-time kindergarten teacher, Liu Tai-ling is now a professional face painter. After studying face painting for two months in Taipei last year, Liu returned to Kaohsiung to launch her second career. In just over six months, she has already painted over 1,000 children. Their faces bloom with color and smiles under Liu’s skillful brush, earning her a reputation for spreading joy with her art.

The 57-year-old Liu used to be a kindergarten teacher. For her birthday last year, she gave herself a much-deserved gift: learning face painting. She studied in Taipei for two months and earned three certificates, preparing herself to launch a second career.

I’m already half a century old, so I want to pursue a joyful profession. I went to study it, but at first, I wasn’t sure I could do it. I got all the necessary certificates to make sure I was qualified before launching my business.

Liu’s background in fashion gives her a good sense of aesthetic beauty. With help from a friend, she set up a trial booth at a shopping center in Kaohsiung’s Dashu District. She embellishes designs with glitter and sequins, sparing no expense to make children’s faces even more vibrant.

I have some talent myself, so I bring my own inspiration to the painting. The designs look simple, but honestly, even I struggle to paint something that simple sometimes. That’s why I add extra touches. I want it to feel complete.

After being in business for about six months, Liu has painted the faces of nearly 1,000 children. Adorned with colorful, sparkling artwork, these children can’t help but smile and dance, showing their confidence. This joy is what drives Liu to keep painting.

People flock to buy time-limited chewy hand-made yuanxiao

The Lantern Festival is just around the corner, and everyone is rushing to stock up on traditional snacks such as yuanxiao. In Tainan, that means making the pilgrimage to a shop that’s been in business for 40 years and only sells their famous rice balls for three days. The labor-intensive process makes for chewy treats packed with flavor, which get customers waiting round the block. To ensure that everyone can buy some sweet treats for the holiday, the shop has extended its opening times this year, while limiting purchases to three boxes per person.

Plump balls of glutinous rice flour are rolled around in the tray, as staff makes an endless stream of yuanxiao. Of course, long lines formed early in the morning.

The queue goes around the block, and everyone is eager to get this season-limited treat. People have been waiting before the shop even opened.

This shop is really famous, and their yuanxiao are really good. They stay springy after you cook them, unlike the ones you get in supermarkets.

This shop in Tainan has been pumping out hand-made rice balls for 40 years, and they only sell ahead of Lantern Festival. The labor-intensive treats sell out fast. This year, the shop is open for five days, and each shopper is limited to three boxes.

It all takes a long time, from the filling to a finished product. We get about 120 to 180kg ready. Once we sell out of a filling, that’s it. We’re trying to make it so that everyone has the chance to buy some.

There’s two flavors available: peanut and black sesame. With a chewy texture and generous filling, everyone loves them. The yuanxiao usually only sell over three days, but this year, the shop has extended that to five so everyone can have a try.

MLB’s Stuart Fairchild excited to play for Taiwan at WBC

Two American-Taiwanese players on the Major League Baseball would’ve joined Taiwan’s national team for the World Baseball Classic, if not for Jonathon Long’s withdrawal due to an elbow injury. That makes Stuart Fairchild of the Cleveland Guardians the only dual-national player representing Taiwan. On Thursday evening, he touched down at Taoyuan International Airport, and was welcomed excitedly by fans. On Friday, he put on the unofficial but representative Team Taiwan jersey as spokesperson, and expressed excitement for representing his mother’s home country.

When I saw Taiwan win the Premier12, it was definitely motivating. There’s a lot of good talent here and it was exciting to see them win it, and now be a part of it.

Fairchild is excited for the opportunity to join Taiwan’s Premier12 champion team, this also being his very first time in the country. Taiwan also seems excited to have him.

He only touched down at Taoyuan International Airport last evening greeted by swarming fans at the lobby to get his autograph. He’s also about to learn that he has his very own nickname in Taiwan.

- How do you say it?
- “Fei-zai.”
- Fei-zai. I mean I like Fei-zai. That could be my new name here. But, yeah, whatever. Most people call me Stu, but Fairchild works, Fei-zai works. Whatever you want to call me.

He was originally not the only American-Taiwanese on this year’s Team Taiwan roster, which also had Jonathon Long of the Chicago Cubs. But the latter withdrew on Thursday owing to an elbow injury. Fairchild wished him well and expressed excitement at visiting the Taipei 101.

The excitement around Fairchild’s official enrollment is a pick-me-up for fans cheering on Team Taiwan, after losing 0-4 to Japan’s Soft Bank Hawks at a “Ready for Classics” rehearsal game on Thursday evening. They’re also excited that another MLB player is added to the star-studded roster.

NCCU alumni donate US$30M for new dorms

After making it big in their careers, many alumni like to give back to the university that set them on their path. Last December, two National Chengchi University alumni quietly donated US$30 million to the school—the equivalent of NT$940 million—to build new dorms. Students were excited about the news, while some joked about how bad of an experience they must have had living there. The school was grateful for the generous donation, predicting that it would also reduce student accommodation fees by 20%.

The second phase of a project to build new dorms at National Chengchi University broke ground in February last year. There will be four new 10-story buildings, providing 1,800 beds for students.

The dorms, built at a cost of NT$2.5 billion, will not only provide accommodation, but also multifunctional lecture rooms, a cafeteria, and lounges. It was recently revealed that some secretive alumni anonymously donated US$30 million specifically for the project.

Two alumni at the end of December gave a large donation. It’s the largest NCCU has received in recent years. To them, taking care of students’ education is the greatest investment in the future. The donation reduces pressure on students’ living expenses, but we also hope that it will improve the surrounding privately run dorms, so they also provide better accommodations for our students.

The generous donation will significantly alleviate the financial burden on NCCU to repay the principal loan and interest to build the dorms, enabling a 20% reduction on student accommodation fees in the future.

Capybaras draw customers to Taoyuan hot pot restaurant

Capybaras are beloved by many for their gentle and lazy personality. Now there’s a hot pot restaurant in Taoyuan where you can dine right alongside these laid-back creatures. The owner bought a pair to live in their restaurant because his daughter loves capybaras. Diners are welcome to interact with them, becoming a huge draw for this simple family establishment.

A pair of capybaras stare off in different directions, adorably unmoving. Aside from watching their delightfully dazed expressions, people can also go inside their enclosure to interact with them.

If you thought this was a farm, you’d be wrong! Just outside of the enclosure there are people eating hot pot. That’s right—these capybaras are inside a restaurant.

It’s one of those places where you can eat right next to two capybaras. I think it’s cool. Farms don’t usually let you touch them. But at this place, you can walk right inside and pet them.

The owner of this restaurant in Taoyuan said that his daughter fell in love with capybaras after seeing them at a farm. After a year and a half, he bought a pair to raise himself. During down times, he lets them roam around the restaurant, but if they’re busy, it’s back into the enclosure.

The pots are kept very hot. If they’re allowed out, I’m afraid they’ll knock into things or cause an accident. It would be bad if a customer gets scalded. So we do let them out to roam around, but only with the customers’ permission. If it’s too busy, we won’t let them out.

They also provide treats to feed the capybaras, which are fully chipped and immunized. At NT$200,000 to NT$300,000 each, the animals definitely require extra care. But they’re also drawing in no small amount of business for this family establishment.
