And the continuing war between the US and Israel and Iran is pushing up oil prices in Taiwan. On Monday, gasoline prices were hiked by NT$1.8 per liter. Without price stabilization measures, the increase would’ve been NT$15 per liter, but CPC is absorbing the remaining amount of NT$13.2. The rise marks the second since the US attacked Iran on Feb. 28, and already, CPC has absorbed more than NT$3.43 billion in fuel costs. But it doesn’t end there. The world is facing a gas supply cliff edge, as the final liquefied natural gas shipments approach their destinations. That in turn is also having an impact on the supply of helium, a byproduct of natural gas production that’s critical to the semiconductor industry. Let’s hear more from an energy expert.

The semiconductor production process requires helium. Without helium, the cooling system won’t work. The attacks on liquefied natural gas plants caused a 17% reduction in production capacity. In the short term, it is crucial to look for alternative suppliers such as the US or Australia.
Iranian attacks on Qatar wiped out 17% of the country’s capacity, and the supply of natural gas from the Gulf countries is set to come to an abrupt end in the next 10 days. According to the Financial Times, Taiwan is grappling with the consequences of its gas-reliant energy mix, as it is one of the biggest buyers of LNG from the Gulf. The Ministry of Economic Affairs has released a statement saying that it has made all the preparations for the changes in gas supply and shipping schedules before the end of May. In addition, there are plans underway to increase imports from other areas of the world in June to ensure a stable supply.
