Woman goes to police for help exorcising spirit

A recent citizen request left the officers at Taichung’s Daya precinct speechless. A woman came to file a report, but it wasn’t about a criminal—she wanted their help catching a ghost in her home. The officers patiently explained that they couldn’t help her with this supernatural request, and suggested that she find a Taoist priest instead.

- You need a priest. Why are you coming to the police?
- It’s the same! Priests are like you police officers.
- It’s not the same. This is a religious matter. We don’t know how to handle that.

The officer on duty at the Daya Police Station took this woman’s report. But the task was trickier than usual. After hearing her request, they were left speechless.

- You guys belong to the world of the living. You catch people.
- We only catch criminals.
- The shadow side catches ghosts.
- We don’t catch ghosts.
- You police officers definitely catch them!

Corporeal thieves and scammers are definitely within the police’s power to apprehend. But this woman wanted them to catch a less tangible harasser. Even if they went to her place, the officers wouldn’t be able to see it, so then what? All they could do was console the woman and try to patiently explain.

She reported strange occurrences recently at her residence. After patiently listening to the report, we explained that the matter was outside of the scope of law enforcement, and suggested that she seek help from somewhere else.

Faced with an otherworldly task, these officers from the world of the living were powerless to help. They could only advise the woman to find an expert in the supernatural like a Taoist priest proficient in exorcism to ease her mental burden.

If taken as a religious matter, they should come pray. If these problems are occurring frequently, then they should probably go see a doctor.

Police are there to serve the public, and may receive any kind of report. But being asked to catch a ghost is admittedly pretty rare, leaving these officers between a rock and a spiritual place.

台中大雅警察局，出現一個讓警察三條線的民眾陳情！因為有阿婆上門報案，不過抓的不是歹徒壞人，而是要求警方到家裡幫忙抓”魔神仔"！罕見特殊要求，讓警方苦口婆心解釋，愛莫能助，希望她另請高明，改找道士幫忙驅邪。

-不同啦，那是師公的我們也不會

阿婆跑來大雅派出所，值班員警受理報案，不過，這次任務非常棘手，警方聽完頭上出現三條線。

-你們屬於陽的，要抓人
-我們只抓賊而已
-陰的就是抓鬼
-鬼我們沒有抓啦
-你們警察就是有抓啦

有形的騙徒、搶匪，警察一定要幫忙抓人，不過，阿婆卻是來找警察抓魔神仔，這....無形的騷擾，警察到場也看不到，是要上哪兒抓啦？只好盡力安撫，耐心解釋。

“反應住處近期有異常情形，經耐心了解情況，向其說明求助事項，非警方權責範圍，建議可向其他民間單位尋求協助。”

突如其來的冥界任務，陽間警察也愛莫能助，只好苦勸婆婆另找高明，或許改找除煞驅魔的道士法師，比較能解決心理障礙。

警察為民服務，報案內容無奇不有，至於找警察抓鬼，還真是少見，讓波麗士大人哭笑不得。

Many people have fond memories of going to amusement parks as a child or with their graduation class. But as travel options abound and more people choose to go abroad, amusement parks in Taiwan are increasingly being compared with those in other countries and business has suffered as a result.

YouTuber Ku one filmed a video visiting amusement parks across Taiwan to see if they’re really as run down as people say.

On a visit to one of the popular parks he visited, Leofoo Village, it was unusually quiet for a weekend. There were fewer than 10 people on a ride. And even though it was 2pm on a beautiful day, the parking lot was basically empty.

Even though the G5 coaster at Janfusun Fancyworld looks as fun as ever, the number of visitors is dwindling. People would rather go abroad to parks like Disney or Universal Studios than stay in Taiwan. Some people believe it’s because Taiwan’s parks don’t have strong themes, are in remote locations, and have aging facilities.

Since I have kids, I would consider going to a local amusement park on vacation. The rides can’t be too extreme. It would also be convenient if it’s packaged with a hotel stay.

The last amusement park I went to must have been Leofoo Village, about 20 years ago. If there are some newer parks, I’d like to check them out.

According to data from the Tourism Administration, E-Da World in Kaohsiung had the most visitors last year at 5.01 million. The second most-visited was Lihpao in Taichung at more than 4.49 million. As Taiwan’s largest indoor amusement park, Miaoli’s Shang Shun unexpectedly took third, with Leofoo Village in Hsinchu following closely behind. Travel agencies say that all-inclusive parks are becoming more popular.

Some amusement parks in Taiwan still primarily target student groups for graduation trips or field trips. Others are offering more comprehensive packages, combined with shopping or hotels.

Many people now in their 30s or 40s have fond memories of going to an amusement park for their graduation trip, and are now interested in taking their kids. But as parks in Taiwan can’t keep up with their international competitors, it seems like this new generation of students will be making different memories.

20-Year study identifies risk factors for breast cancer

Across the globe, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The good news is that experts from Academia Sinica and the National Health Research Institutes have identified risk factors after a 20-year study. Women who are simultaneously exposed to the plasticizer DEHP, have a poor metabolic rate and an earlier age of menarche are seven times more likely to get the disease. Let’s find out more.

Forty-four-year-old actress Sharon Hsu recently revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and had undergone a mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. As there was no family history of the disease, at first she couldn’t understand and asked : “Why me?”, sparking discussion.

A team from Academia Sinica and the National Health Research Institutes have conducted a 20-year study confirming that when three factors are present simultaneously—high exposure to the plasticizer DEHP, poor metabolic rate and earlier age at the first menstrual cycle, a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer can be up to seven times higher.

Common products that may contain plasticizers include plastic household items such as plastic pipes, plastic bags, cling film and interlocking foam floor mats. There are also cosmetics, such as hairspray, perfume, nail polish, and lipstick, and plastic toys and dolls, all of which may contain plasticizers.

DEHP plasticizers migrate out relatively easily. When you are in prolonged contact with them, especially in close contact with your skin, such as some slippers that contain plasticizers, they will still enter the body through the skin, the largest organ in our body. Drinking more water can help you metabolize more effectively.

Doctors urge people to drink plenty of water to help metabolize plasticizers and reduce the burden on the kidneys. They also recommend regular screenings to prevent cancer from developing.

Aussie content creator moved to tears by Taiwanese hospitality

A content creator from Australia recently posted a video about the kindness he received from strangers on his ongoing round-the-island trip in Taiwan. Over the month of March, which is also Brain Injury Awareness Month in some countries, Brendan Sutton is documenting his trip and raiding funds for relevant charities. The video that has gone viral among Taiwanese netizens even attracted the attention of former President Tsai Ing-wen, who left a comment to welcome him. In the video, he was moved to tears by the support he’s gotten from local Taiwanese.

This is Brendan Sutton, a content creator from Australia. He’s on a round-the-island cycling trip around Taiwan. He broke down in tears in this video taken at a convenience store and posted on Threads.

They wanted to support my journey with a bit of money, so I honestly shed a couple of happy tears inside this 7-Eleven. I just don’t know what to say. Taiwan, you have treated me so well.

Strangers offered him water, food, and even cash—as much as NT$1,000—which he said deeply touched him. His post attracted none other than the most famous Threads user in Taiwan—former President Tsai Ing-wen.

I just feel so blessed that she resonated with that post. I went around one corner, and this lady was out the window going, “Jiayou! Jiayou! Jiayou!” I didn’t know what it meant at the time.

Ever since the 38-year-old met his Taiwanese partner, he’s made multiple trips to Taiwan beginning in 2023. He’s also been living with post-concussion syndrome after suffering a brain injury in 2020 while surfing. But that has not stopped him from chasing his dream for adventure, across Australia and abroad, on top of working a full-time job.

The brain injury just kind of ruined my life. I feel like I lost the last five years of my life. When I go back home, I feel like, if I’m ever in a dark place, I can just think back on this time. That’s why I’m going to put this in a photo frame, and I’m going to put it on my wall, so this is always going to remind me of traveling Taiwan, the support I got, the love.

Sutton says even though his condition still makes him feel down at times, he will always look back on this round-the-island trip and the hospitality he received with fondness. He’ll be wrapping up his journey on the 29th in Taichung with gratitude.

Energetic 90-yo woman rocks it out at Megaport Festival

Megaport Festival in Kaohsiung attracts hundreds of thousands of music fans every year. One of the highlights last weekend happened among the audience, when a 90-year-old woman danced to the music, to the delight of other spectators. She was accompanied by her granddaughter, who said her grandma enjoyed the event so much that she was reluctant to go home. In our exclusive, we tracked down the lady, Cheng Chin-chih herself, and followed her to the second day of the event, where she stole the show.

That’s right, a silver-haired elderly is dancing along to the beat at Megaport Festival with everyone else.

This video had gone viral over the weekend and earned the protagonist a new nickname: “Megaport Grandma.” Even her granddaughter is surprised by how much she enjoyed the concert.

My grandchildren said they wanted me to check out the crowd. I wondered why so many people were dancing. I found it interesting. There were so many people. It was like exercising for me, so I just shook around for a little bit.

We tracked down the lady, Cheng Chin-chih herself. She’s 90 years old and already has great-grandchildren. She says she exercises regularly, which is unsurprising seeing how she kept up with the music.

I was a physical laborer, it’s nothing for people who do menial labor. I saw others dancing. I exercise regularly, so I also danced more or less.

Family members across four generations accompanied Cheng for a day trip around Qijin. They passed by the Pier-2 Art Center on the way home. There, they saw a large crowd and followed them toward the stage.

I took grandma around and saw that there was a concert. She slowly made her way forward. I was surprised. She danced more energetically than we did. We thought she’d get tired and asked her if she was and wanted to go home. She insisted that she wasn’t.

I usually watch Woo Gwa’s TV show, and also “The Mother of the Tofu Family.”

- Yes.

Instead of watching TV at home, Cheng went out on Saturday and stumbled upon Megaport Festival. She said she didn’t have enough fun, and wanted to go again today, on Sunday.

This time, Cheng bravely took to the stage and danced to her heart’s content, stealing the show at one of the country’s most well-known music festival.
