The three months of December to February saw rainy weather in the north and east, but in many areas of the west coast, it marked the driest winter season in 75 years. One clear example of the dry spell is the Sun Moon Lake in Nantou, where the water level has decreased dramatically, revealing a statue of nine frogs in its entirety. Over at the Xitou Nature Education Area, the water is so shallow in its famous University Pond, that visitors can almost see the bottom.
The Xitou Nature Education Area is nestled in a valley in the mountains of Nantou surrounded by mountains on three sides. What’s worse is that the park’s drinking water and the water supplied to the University Pond all rely on natural mountain springs. Though northeasterly winds brought some water to Taiwan this past winter, not much of it was retained. Officials say the situation is not severe enough to be considered a drought yet, but they still ask the general public to conserve water where possible.
