At the Porsche Carrera Cup Japan held this Sunday at Suzuka Circuit, Taiwanese driver Tiger Wu outpaced the competition to take the top spot. But what really caught everyone off guard came during the podium ceremony, when the music playing wasn’t the usual flag anthem, but Taiwan’s national anthem. For Taiwanese fans in attendance, it was an unexpected and touching moment, one made even more special by the victory of the nearly 60-year-old racing veteran, who’s long been a familiar and celebrated name in the sport.

Taiwanese fans were shocked to hear the national anthem echo across the race track during an F1 event in Japan.

It happened during the Porche Carrera Cup Japan, which took place at the Suzuka Circuit on Sunday. Taiwan’s own Tiger Wu took home the win, and during the podium ceremony, Taiwan’s national anthem was played, instead of the usual flag anthem. It so happened that an executive from a Taiwanese telecom had brought along 14 prize winners from a phone promotion lucky draw on a trip to watch the F1 Grand Prix. It was an emotional moment.

We all stopped and looked at each other. It gave us goosebumps! All of us from Taiwan stood up at attention on the spot, watching as the national anthem was played. It was so moving. When Tiger was on stage, he kept pointing up at our Olympic flag.

Tiger Wu is almost 60 years old and has long been competing in top-level races, having won the Porsche Carrera cup for four years in a row now since 2023.

At the beginning, the tiger designs were more intimidating. Off the track, Tiger is super cheerful and loves being out and about. He has a very sunny, upbeat personality. This kind of competition is really demanding, so if you’re not good enough, you wouldn’t be able to compete.

Despite winning the top prize, Wu is not actually a professional racer. Regardless, his passion for the sport is helping put Taiwan on the world map.

今年要滿60歲的吳志祥，長年投入頂尖賽車賽，2023年到2025年，都曾在保時捷卡雷拉杯賽拿第一。

吳志祥本業並非職業選手，帶著熱血馳騁賽場，也讓台灣被世界看見。

Handsome farmer draws attention at awards ceremony

A recent winner at the Outstanding Farmers Awards in Taibao City, Chiayi, stood out for his charm, youth, and height, at 180cm tall. The awardee, Wu Cheng-hsien, was a flight attendant for 10 years before returning to his hometown last July to work on the family farm. He attended the awards on behalf of his father, unexpectedly drawing attention for his good looks.

At this farmers awards ceremony in Chiayi’s Taibao City, the awardee on the far left of the second row stands out. Younger and taller than the other men on stage, Wu Cheng-hsien came back to Chiayi last July after working as a flight attendant for a decade. Now working at the family farm, he accepted an award on behalf of his father, drawing attention for his good looks.

I think what my father does is something to be very proud of. I accepted the award on his behalf, and I was really moved, I felt very proud.

Now 39 years old, Wu moved back to his hometown to spend more time with his family. His experience with customer service as a flight attendant serves him well in his new career as a farmer.

Now that I’ve returned, it feels like I’m more grounded. The biggest difference is that I have to speak Taiwanese very well, otherwise they just keep saying, “Huh, huh, huh?” But I think they’re all very friendly.

DPP slams TPP’s rally against Ko’s verdict

The TPP held a rally this past Sunday, to protest against the 17-year prison sentenced handed down on former Chair Ko Wen-je. But the event was met with ridicule from the DPP. Even before the comments poured in, a video clip of Ko became a popular meme, as he gave a passionate speech during which he pointed a finger at the Presidential Office. Additionally, pundits alleged that the TPP used bots to inflate viewership of the livestream, while a DPP lawmaker questioned the motive of the 23 KMT lawmakers who attended. Let’s find out more.

Former TPP Chair Ko Wen-je’s voice trembles as he gets worked up while leading a protest in front of the Presidential Office on Sunday. But who is this “Lai Hsiang-te” he speaks of?

No one in the DPP seems to have a clue. Replaying the video clip, in which Ko is clearly pointing at the Presidential Office building, it’s got to be the president, Lai Ching-te. But Lai wasn’t at the office, but at a baseball game in Tainan.

The video clip of Ko has become a meme. Ko’s antics, according to the TPP, were witnessed in-person by more than 80,000 at the rally. However, critics put the estimate at less than 10% that. They also alleged that because more than 50,000 viewers joined in watching the livestream just ten minutes after the event started, it’s got to be bots.

Viewership multiplied by 3.8 times when Ko Wen-je took the stage, that’s a 280% increase. If they want to use bots, they should’ve made sure that supporting channels, including TPP Media and Holger Chen, should also get a boost. But TPP Media only saw a 10% in the same period.

Not only staunch TPP supporters were there. As many as 23 KMT lawmakers were on stage in support. DPP lawmakers say they were only there to win over Ko’s supporters for future elections.

Frankly, I think it’s disaster profiteering. They’re waiting for Ko to fall and take over his supporter base. Everyone’s making calculations about what to do should Ko fall, instead of thinking of how to prevent him from falling.

The DPP lawmaker says that one should not be fooled by appearances, that even though the KMT was at Ko’s rally, they’re not necessarily there for his, or the TPP’s best interests.

Yilan rest stop becomes favorite spot to watch sunrise over Turtle Island

The Yongzhen coast in Zhuangwei Township boasts one of the eight best views of Yilan: the sunrise over Turtle Island. However, a lack of tourist facilities like toilets and showers have caused a problem for nearby temples. After urging from residents, the Northeast Coast Scenic Area Administration set up a rest stop at Yongzhen. Adjacent to both Provincial Highway No. 2 and the coastal bike path, the spot has become an instant hit for photos.

The sandy interior of this modern building along the coast gives it a warm ambiance, with Turtle Island just outside the window. This is the new Yongzhen rest stop in Yilan County.

The Yongzhen coast in Zhuangwei Township draws lots of visitors to watch the sunrise over Turtle Island, one of the eight classic views of Yilan. But lacking nearby infrastructure like a restroom or showers, many people would go to the nearby temples to use their facilities.

Baseball game watcher slaps worker at Tainan stadium debut

The Asia-Pacific International Baseball Training Centers’ very first game was held on Sunday, and it’s already generating more headlines than expected. That’s because a spectator, a man surnamed Chiang, slapped a stadium worker. Chiang was told not to stand in the aisle, but he wouldn’t budge, reprimanding the worker instead. Another worker tried to break up the fight, but ended up being slapped. The CPBL issued later issued a statement to condemn Chiang and ban him from attending another CBPL game. Meanwhile, netizens also found out where he worked, leading to the company to dismiss him.

The incident took place at the Asia-Pacific International Baseball Training Centers in Tainan, during the stadium’s debut on Sunday, which was packed with excited fans, including the assailant. The worker that was slapped reported his injuries in the company of CPBL managers and filed a police report. The CPBL issued a statement to condemn the assailant and to ban him from attending another CPBL game.

President Lai receives bipartisan delegation from US Congress

President Lai Ching-te received a bipartisan delegation from the US Congress on Monday morning. The group was led by US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, along with Republican Senator John Curtis. Though their Taiwan visit is short, sources say the delegation will urge Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan to pass the special defense budget as soon as possible.
