And now for an update on the Polam Kopitiam food poisoning outbreak. The number of victims has been adjusted to 29, after two cases from the chain’s Raohe branch were excluded. Five victims remain in intensive care, but one of them is showing signs of improvement and could soon be transferred to a general ward. The other four are still in comas due to brain damage, and they all have severe liver damage. Two of them could need liver transplants, and one is on cardiopulmonary life support.

These four cases have very severe liver and kidney damage, and there has been no improvement. Clinically we are continuing supportive care. With regard to the kidney damage, we are using dialysis to maintain their vital signs.

Plasma exchange is being discussed. Every intensive care unit has its own protocol for handling severe cases. There is no antidote for Bongkrekic acid, and it metabolizes slowly. Its half life is four days. So we are using supportive care in ICUs to help them.

Authorities know that Bongkrekik acid is the culprit behind the outbreak, but they still don’t know where it came from. All 35 food samples from the restaurant’s kitchen have tested negative for Bongkrekic acid. Experts say the toxin is relatively rare, because it needs three precise conditions to form. Testing is still underway on environmental samples including cutting boards, with results due in two weeks at the earliest.

寶林食物中毒案,衛福部傍晚公布最新的個案數,調整為29例,排除"饒河店"的兩例。而在加護病房的5名重症患者中,1人病情好轉,有望轉一般病房,另外4人因腦損傷還在昏迷中,1人持續使用葉克膜,4人肝臟受損得非常厲害,其中2位考慮換肝。

“他們(北市4重症)還是非常嚴重的肝衰竭,腎衰竭的情況也都沒有改善,臨床端還是持續用支持療法,腎衰竭部分,還是採取洗腎,繼續維持他們的生命跡象”

“血漿置換術當然是大家有做討論,每個加護病房,他們有他們處理重症的方式,米酵菌酸本身是沒有解毒劑的,而且代謝比較慢,每4天才會少掉一半,所以都是用我們,重症加護的支持性療法在幫他們”

雖然目前確認了中毒物質是米酵菌酸,但毒從哪裡來? 中央帶回寶林廚房中,35樣食材採檢米酵菌酸都是陰性,而且米酵菌酸生成需要三大要件,不太容易產生。北市衛生局現在針對砧板和廚師手部進行環境採檢,最快兩周就會有結果。
