Front to bring showers to western Taiwan next week

2024-05-23

Plum rain fronts are bringing instability to the weather all over Taiwan, with intermittent rains around the island. That’s set to ease on Saturday as the front moves away, providing a brief spell of good weather. But another front will sweep in next week, bringing showers to the western half of the island.

A passing front is bringing unstable weather to Northern Taiwan, with on and off showers through the day.

From tomorrow on, the front will gradually move away and weaken. So the random downpours will become less frequent, and we’ll return to just afternoon thundershowers.

Another plum rain front is expected to arrive next week. Its impact will be most significant on Tuesday, with heavy rains expected in the western half of the island. Over to the south in the Philippine Sea, the first tropical storm of the season could be about to form.

We expect it to take form and strengthen into the first tropical storm of the year. In the short term, it will draw closer to Luzon Island, before moving north next Monday and Tuesday and then veering northeast toward the Ryukyu Islands. That’s the most likely course based on our assessments, and we don’t expect any direct impact on Taiwan in the short term.

This latest plum rain front brought 41.49 million tons of water to Taiwan’s reservoirs from Monday to Thursday morning. The biggest gains were in the northern Feitsui Reservoir, where water levels rose by 19.1 million tons. Officials say the reservoir now has enough water to supply for three months without shortages. Shihmen Reservoir in Taoyuan gained 3.4 million tons of water, and the Sun Moon Lake and Wushe Reservoir gained a total of 4 million tons. The rains did not replenish reservoirs in the south as much, but hopes are high that the next wave of plum rains will top them up.
