Vote on contested legislative package could take place next Friday

2024-06-12

A vote on a hotly contested legislative package could take place as early as next Friday. In a formal motion, the Cabinet has asked lawmakers to reconsider the package, which expands the legislature’s supervisory powers over the executive branch. The motion will appear on the legislature’s agenda on Friday. If all goes smoothly, the Cabinet will be invited to next Tuesday’s session, to make its case against the package. A vote to nullify the package could be held next Friday.

But clashes between the ruling and opposition parties could put a wrench in the schedule. Legislative speaker Han Kuo-yu has called a round of talks on Thursday, to hash out terms and procedures acceptable to all parties.
