For one major supermarket chain, small farming is turning into big business

Small farms have received a lot of government attention in recent years. Just the phrase “small farmers” is now a buzzword that can attract customers in supermarkets. At a recent press event, small farmers and supermarket execs came together to promote some of their latest projects. Young people who make the leap into farming as a career can make serious profits if the right conditions come together. And for one major supermarket chain, small farming is turning into big business.

The government has started many new farming policies in recent years, supporting small farmers in artistic and cultural pursuits, as well as natural farming methods. The “small farm economy” has flourished in many places. Lin Hao-ping is a 26-year-old small farmer from Yunlin, who has created annual turnover of over NT$100 million all through his own efforts.

Young people rarely try farming. But I think that actually I just happened to see that not many people do it, it’s a market without young people, so I got in there. And I gradually started doing it and renting land, and growing food.

Lin’s toxic-chemical-free baby corn is fresh and crunchy. Leftovers after the harvest become feed for dairy farmers, rather than going to waste. And another young farmer quit his old job to begin his “Second Spring” career.

I wanted to make the most of my youth, and while there are still lots of things I want to do, to do them. If you’re willing to do it, and to do it well, I think it’s an easier income than sitting at a desk.

Hsu Chien-shen left his work in the steel industry to follow his dream of farming. He waters his fields in Taoyuan with mountain spring water, growing organic spinach and milk cabbage, and has carved out a niche.

These vegetables picked directly by our small farmers are making a profit of almost NT$900 million. We’re aiming for NT$1 billion this year. The fresh milk from small farmers has also reached NT$1.8 billion. Our goal is to make profits of NT$2 billion.

This supermarket is creating a “small farmers’ section” in certain locations, as a concrete way to support small farmers. It claims that all its farming produce has government certificates, and professional labels, so consumers can be sure about food safety.

近年來政府推出許多新農業政策,支持在地小農,"小農經濟學"像是雨後春筍般出現,來自雲林的農友,年僅26歲,靠著自己的雙手,創造出一年上億元的營業額,連鎖超市和小農合作,去年光是小農直採商品業績就達到九億元,小農鮮奶十八億元的好成績。

近年來政府推出許多新農業政策,孕育各地文創小農或自然農法生產者,"小農經濟學"像是雨後春筍般出現,來自雲林的林浩平,年僅26歲,靠著自己的雙手,創造出一年上億元的營業額。

”其實農業很少年輕人去嘗試,那我覺得說,其實我就剛好看到這個人很少,沒有什麼年輕人的市場,我就衝進去,然後就慢慢自己做,自己去租地,種植這樣”

林浩平無毒栽種的玉米筍口感脆甜,採收後的農剩料,還可以提供給酪農作為牛隻飼料,形成循環經濟。還有小農辭掉原本工作,開創"事業二春"。

“趁著年輕,自己還有很多事情想要做的時候,去做自己想要做的事,如果你肯做,你願意好好的做,我覺得這個收入是會比上班來得好的”

徐健燊當時毅然決然離開鋼鐵廠,回到最愛的農田實現青農夢想,在桃園引山泉水灌溉,種出有機山菠菜,和有機奶油白菜,創造出自己的一片天。

“我們的這個小農直採的蔬菜,目前已經達到大概將近九億的一個業績,今年會挑戰十億,那小農鮮乳的部分也達到十八億,目標也要挑戰這個二十億的一個業績”

連鎖超市和在地小農合作,在限定門市推出小農專區,用行動支持在地小農,也標榜農產品皆有政府許可標章、專業認證,幫民眾的健康把關。
