Taiwan shares plummet 752 points, marking second-biggest drop for Taiex

2024-07-26

Over the past two days Typhoon Gaemi battered Taiwan, while a tech storm ravaged Wall Street. The losses dragged down Taiwan shares on Friday, with the Taiex losing 752 points, or 3.29% to close at 22,119. That’s the second biggest single-day drop for the index. TSMC shares shed NT$55 to close down 5.62% at NT$924. When will stability return? Let’s hear from an analyst.

The fall from the highest point is already a drop of 9.5%, almost 10%. From previous experience, it could reach between 10% to 12%. In late August, heavyweight tech stocks such as Nvidia will release their financial reports. If the growth continues, and there’s positive signals, then the stock prices may begin to rebound officially.

Hon Hai shares fell 4.71%, closing below NT$200, while MediaTek shed 2.35%. Amid the slump in electronics stocks, the Yuanta P-shares Taiwan Top 50 ETF proved popular with investors, with a trading volume of 423,000 shares. Amid big changes in global markets, investors have taken a more conservative approach.
