On Thursday, President Lai Ching-te attended a symposium commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Formosan Self-salvation. In his remarks, Lai paid homage to the author of the pro-independence manifesto, Peng Ming-min. The president added that 60 years since the declaration, Taiwan’s democracy had flourished and was now a beacon in Asia.

Sixty years ago, in those authoritarian, martial and dark ages, our much-beloved Professor Peng Ming-min, Mr. Hsieh Tsung-min and Mr. Wei Ting-chao, unafraid of endangering their lives, published the Declaration of Formosan Self-salvation. It’s truly a great feat.
The president also spoke of his wishes for the country.

Although Chiang Kai-shek has long passed, communist threats not only persist, they’ve intensified. Sixty years ago Professor Peng Ming-min, Mr. Hsieh Tsung-min and Mr. Wei Ting-chao exposed the regime’s lie in the 20th century, that we’d retake the mainland. Now we must have the courage to expose the Communists’ hoax of annexing Taiwan.
Lai reiterated the significance of Taiwan’s democracy in Asia. He paid tribute to activists in Taiwan’s authoritarian past, who had planted the seeds for democracy in the country. Several scholars shared their views on Taiwan’s democratization. The president also paid tribute to the many pro-Taiwan guests of honor at the event. Peng Ming-min Foundation board member Maysing Yang shared her cherished memories of the late activist.

In the US Peng lobbied for the Taiwan Relations Act. I’ve been in the US for a long time, and I’ve worked with him extensively.
The president’s attendance highlighted the former activists’ contribution to Taiwan, and the government’s resolve to honor their heritage.

由彭明敏文教基金會主辦「台灣人民自救宣言六十週年」研討會，週四登場，總統賴清德特地撥空出席，除了細數台灣推動民主化過程，也向台灣民主鬥士彭明敏、謝聰敏、魏廷朝致意，強調如今台灣的民主，已成為亞洲的民主，是大家共同打拼的結果。

“60年前在那個專制獨裁、戒嚴的黑暗年代，我們所敬愛彭明敏教授、謝聰敏先生、魏廷朝先生不怕生命危險，發表台灣人民自救運動宣言，這是非常偉大的行動。”
感念民主前輩的付出、努力，總統也提出自己三個心得。

“雖然蔣介石已經過去，但是共產威脅不只還存在著，比過去更強烈。60年前彭明敏教授、謝聰敏、魏廷朝先生揭穿20世紀反攻大陸的騙局，現在我們要有勇氣，揭穿共產主義要併吞台灣的騙局。”
賴清德也強調，台灣的民主是亞洲的民主，感念民主前輩不畏極權，一步步努推動的成果。研討會邀請多位學者分享台灣民主之路。現場來了許多台派團體及代表，總統一一向他們致謝，彭明敏文教基金會董事楊黃美幸，也回想起對彭明敏的回憶。
