Open House Taipei, a weekend for exploration

Open House Taipei is an annual event that allows visitors to tour architectural gems and other sites that are usually closed to the public or require an entrance fee. The 2024 Open House Taipei will be held over one weekend in mid-November and offer visitors the chance to tour 100 places in Taipei. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to Open House Taipei cofounder Richard Hsu to find out more about the event.

On Saturday, Nov. 16 Open House Taipei will kick off again. Visitors can visit architectural spaces across Taipei that are usually closed to the public or require an entrance fee. One such place is the National Museum of History. After five years of renovations, the building is finally open to the public again. During Open House Taipei, visitors will be able to tour the museum for free and attend a forum to learn more about the museum’s history and architecture.

This space has many collective memories for all the citizens. As you can see, it is like a Chinese temple style. They have many unique exhibitions and collections. They have a very modern and new renovation design. It inspires people to have a new vision and imagination of this space. We hope to have a discussion like a small forum to invite people to have a dialogue about the new design and the old collections.

The first Open House took place in London in 1992, while Taipei initiated its own edition in 2020. This year, 100 spaces in Taipei that are usually closed to the public or hard to access are open to all. Some locations on the list include the backstage of Cloud Gate Theater, The Welcome Building of Bethany, the National Center of Photography and image’s rooftop, and more.

Let’s talk about some special sites this year. The first is the Welcome Building of Bethany. It is a very special social welfare site especially for young people. It is a very complicated modern building that has different services for different generations and different kinds of people who need help. Secondly, is Cloud Gate Theater. They have a special tour for backstage. You can operate the lights in the backstage and you can understand the dancers’ life. The third one is the waterways. Actually, Taipei has many water resources around the city and under the city. In old times, there were ancient waterways under the roads. We want to inspire people to explore the old history and the relationships between the people and the water.

The fifth edition of Open House Taipei is centered on the theme “Access & Inclusion.”

This year our theme is “Access & Inclusion,” which means each open sites is the living room for all the citizens. It is like a temporary living room that everybody can visit the site and have a dialogue with the space owners and the designers. The concept of inclusion is that everyone has different perspectives of each space. They have unique memories. They have unique expectations and imaginations for this city. We want to invite everyone to explore their own versions of the city.

The 2024 Open House Taipei will be held Nov. 16 and 17. Organizers hope to encourage people to learn about the relationships between architecture, cities, and landscapes.

一年一度的「打開台北」活動起跑！開啟城市中日常不易進入或需要門票的場域。"打開台北"將於11月16日正式登場，邀請民眾參觀台北近百個建築空間。一起來看看2024"打開台北"的亮點!

11月16日「打開台北」將再次回歸，民眾可以參觀、進入隱藏在台北的建築空間，其中一個地點是國家歷史博物館。經過五年的整修，這棟建築終於再次對外開放。在活動期間，民眾可以免費參觀博物館，並參加論壇了解更多關於博物館的歷史和建築。

"這個館遺留下許多回憶。你可以看到，它就像中國寺廟的風格，館內也有許多獨特的展覽和收藏。整修後的史博館，現代風的裝潢設計以及改建的新面貌，激發民眾對這個空間產生新觀點和想像。我們有一個小型論壇，邀請民眾就新舊面貌進行討論。"

首屆Open House活動起源於1992年在英國倫敦，而台北則於 2020 年推出了自己的打開台北活動。今年開放地點包括雲門劇場的後台、伯大尼來樓、國家攝影文化中心的屋頂等等。

"今年的亮點呢，第一個是伯大尼來樓。這是一個非常特別的社會福利機構，特別是針對年輕人。這是一座非常複雜的現代化建築，機構為不同年齡層、不同類型的人提供服務。其次是雲門劇場的後台參觀，可以在後台操作燈光，了解舞者的生活。第三個是草山水道系統，其實台北市的周圍和地底下有很多水資源，在這裡可以一窺，舊時代埋藏在道路底下的古老水道系統。我們希望鼓勵民眾去探索歷史和人、水之間的關係。"

今年活動邁入第五年，定調「入場：共融」為主題。

"今年我們的主題是「入場：共融」，意思是每個城市空間打造成城市客廳，它就像自家的客廳，民眾可以自由地走動、感受，並能自在輕鬆地發表不同的看法，與空間或設計者進行對話，共感理念。他們有獨特的記憶，對這座城市有著期待與想像，我們想邀請每個人探索自己的城市。"

2024打開台北系列活動將於11月16日至17日登場，邀請民眾來探索，在台北的路途上，感受空間建築、城市以及人之間的連結。

Kaohsiung Municipal Girls’ High kicks off centennial celebrations

The Kaohsiung Municipal Girls’ Senior High School is celebrating its centennial. Celebrations kicked off on Friday morning with a thrilling performance from the school’s marching band. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai was in attendance, where he reflected that in the era when he attended senior high, it was forbidden to enter female-only campuses, unless it was an anniversary celebration. He joked he was born in the wrong era. Let’s hear what Chen and others had to say.

This marching band, brimming with youthfulness and adorned with smiles, kicks off the 100th anniversary of the Kaohsiung Municipal Girls’ Senior High School.

When I was studying, I was not allowed in here, maybe only for school anniversary celebrations. So I am very envious of male students who can participate in the second-year camp and drink-swapping days. I was born at the wrong time. If I’d only been born a few years later, I would have had even more opportunities to enter this school.

The school has been established for 100 years and has fostered talents in all kinds of fields. The aunt of Minister Without Portfolio Chen Shih-chung is an alumnus of the school, having attended during the Japanese colonial era. This year she made a special trip to her old school to attend the grand event.

This year, as it happens, auntie will turn 100. She was born in the same year as the Kaohsiung Municipal Girls’ Senior High School and has witnessed its entire history until today. So today she wanted to come to her school and I said of course I would accompany her.

I think it’s really good to be young. We didn’t have these activities in earlier times.

The centennial celebrations saw the school’s teachers compete in the creativity stakes. One dressed up as Marilyn Monroe, while others were cartoon characters. Students in the school were also inspired by Chinese puns to dress up in humorous ways.

We are class 20. Twenty and evil spirit are homophones. We’re a bit like a castle with evil spirits, and then a bit like a group of dancing demons.

Participants wrote down their prayers and wishes on cards and put them in a time capsule. Then current and former students from different generations will carve out the next phase of their bright futures, before they meet to open it 30 years later.

A second Trump presidency sparks concern in East Asia

US allies in Asia are congratulating Donald Trump on his decisive victory in Tuesday’s US presidential election, but many in Asia also worry about what the return of his “America First” foreign policy means for their countries, as VOA’s Bill Gallo reports from Seoul.

In his first term as president, Donald Trump mixed high-profile threats with diplomacy as he pursued an unpredictable foreign policy. With Trump now returning to office, US allies and partners in Asia are trying to figure out what “America First” Round Two means for them.

In South Korea, President Yoon Suk Yeol was optimistic on Thursday, saying he and Trump will build a “perfect security posture.”

We talked about having strong solidarity and partnership in the Asia-Pacific and global region based on the South Korea-US alliance.

Many in Seoul are concerned Trump could strike a deal with North Korea, possibly without consulting the South. Trump has also continued to push South Korea to pay much more to host US troops, leading many in Seoul to question just how committed Washington is to its defense.

Japan has similar worries, although Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru called his first talks with Trump “very friendly.” Ishiba’s ruling party last month suffered a major election defeat. If he survives as prime minister, some fear a weakened Ishiba could have trouble pushing back on Trump’s demands.

To deal successfully with Mr. Trump, you need to be strong. You need to be well endowed with your political capital. And that’s the thing that the Japanese leader – Ishiba, whoever – cannot show and cannot have.

In Taiwan, the government insisted its ties with the US remain “rock solid.”
But it also warned China may try to test the new US president through continued military intimidation of the island.

Trump has sent mixed messages on Taiwan, complaining it steals US manufacturing jobs and should pay if it wants US protection.

There are also widespread concerns about more Trump tariffs, and how an expanded US-China trade war would affect the region.

University’s annual CSE forum spotlights smart healthcare

National Cheng Kung University on Friday held its annual computer science and engineering forum. This year, the theme is centered on AI applications in healthcare. Several tech business leaders gave presentations at the conference, highlighting the importance and potential of smart healthcare, while also expressing their views on the next Donald Trump presidency.

An annual forum on computer science and engineering has kicked off at National Cheng Kung University. This year’s keynote speakers include several tech industry heavyweights, who’re presenting on AI applications in healthcare. The speakers say the factors to success in this field are data, algorithms and computing power.

AI plus IoT sounds a bit esoteric. But smart hospitals, smart factories, smart shops — all these are encompassed in the IoT industry. You’d connect the dots and add AI, that way you’ll feel for yourself, what intelligence in AI really means.

In the age of AI transition, tech players are carving new niches for themselves. For example, Qisda established smart hospitals in China, and has been teaming up with hospitals to provide smart solutions, too, creating new streams of revenue. Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s imminent return to the White House is casting a shadow over the tech industry in Taiwan. What do business leaders really think?

Personally, I believe supply chain issues have little to do with who becomes the next US president. The key is still cross-strait security. And long as there’s cross-strait security, Taiwan won’t have a problem.

Depends on which countries Trump will target first. Everyone in the supply chains will be very busy, so of course we’ll need many alternative plans.

Peter Chen, the chair of Qisda says the company’s locations in Taiwan, China and Vietnam allow it to mitigate geopolitical risks. Generally speaking, the business leaders believe their performances in the upcoming year will improve.
