Animal protection catches chicken-devouring black bear

Last month, a Formosan black bear broke into chicken farms in a Hualien village, devouring around 400 chickens along the way. Since the incident was reported, the farmers were originally advised to deter it with firecrackers, to no avail. Now, animal protection officers have caught it and are deciding the best way forward for the bear and the farmers.
This Formosan black bear lying still has its face covered. It’s under anesthesia and being inspected by animal protection officers. Weighing 125kg, the male bear can only be carried with help from the entire team.
In October, this black bear broke into six chicken farms in Sikihiki village, located in Hualien’s Zhuoxi Township, during which he devoured around 400 chickens.

On the evening of Nov. 6, we set up around six bucket traps and three safety traps around them. Our officer saw it in the first safety trap when they went to check it.
Last month, local chicken farmers reported the incident, then followed authorities’ request to deploy infra-red cameras, which aided in tracking the bear. In the beginning they tried shooing away the bear with firecrackers.
But that wasn’t very effective. So the traps were set up, and the bear was captured. Now animal protection officers are deciding whether to release it back into the wild.

Whether to release it into the wild depends on whether it’s afraid of people. If it’s suitable for release, then we’ll constrain it and even have it wear a GPS collar, so we’ll know its locations and be able to track its whereabouts.
Animal protection officers are working to figure out the best solution between keeping the bear safe and the farmers happy.

黑熊偷吃400多隻雞 林保署成功安全誘捕"滋擾熊"

上個月花蓮卓溪鄉石平部落，發現有黑熊出沒，還大啖雞農飼養的放山雞，即使放炮驅趕，也沒用，牠連闖六間雞舍，吃掉約400隻雞。林保署最後利用安全誘捕方式，成功逮到這隻吃霸王餐的大黑熊，是隻重達一百多公斤的公熊。目前正評估如何進行野放。
臉蓋白布，胸口呈現一個大大的V字，這隻已經被麻醉的台灣黑熊，正接受動保人員的詳細檢查，牠重達125公斤，是隻公熊。初步檢查後，大伙再合力抬上車。
這隻黑熊，就是上個月跑到花蓮卓溪鄉石平部落，連闖六間雞舍，吃掉約400隻雞的滋擾熊。

“11月6日的晚上，我們除了佈置大概六個桶裝陷阱之外，我們又用那個安全陷阱，就是在周遭佈置三個，去到的第一個陷阱，他(工作站人員)就看到了它(熊)”
上個月當地雞農發現有熊闖入後，配合林保署放置紅外線攝影機，掌握熊出沒軌跡，一開始放炮驅趕。
但效果有限，最後設置陷阱，成功逮到吃雞黑熊，目前正評估後續如何野放。

“評估適不適合野放，就是牠到底會不會怕人，那我們會做一些，如果適合野放，我們會做一些負面制約，甚至給牠戴帶衛星項圈，來提醒牠(熊)的位置，我們會來做一些牠的一個追蹤的方式”
逮到吃霸王餐的台灣黑熊，真正的目的，不是要牠付出代價，而是在黑熊、部落居民之間，找出一個彼此共存的平衡點。
