Fisherman catches eel with snake cages in Shihmen Reservoir

Shihmen Reservoir in Taoyuan is one of Taiwan’s most famous irrigation projects. It provides valuable resources and supports many anglers like Lu Li-fu, who has been fishing for nearly 60 years. He specializes in catching giant mottled eel using only a snake cage without any bait. Let’s find out how he does it.

Snake cages catch bottom feeders like eels and marble goby.
With nearly 60 years of fishing experience, Lu catches eel using snake cages. They’re about 10 feet long with holes in every section, designed so that fish can’t get out once they swim inside. As long as it’s put in their feeding path, eel will get caught in the net without requiring any bait.

It’s seasonal and you need to pay attention to the terrain. Flatter terrain is better. This method doesn’t require much skill or bait. If they’re swimming by, they will go into the net themselves to eat the smaller fish inside.
Although there’s no need for bait, to succeed at catching fish, you need to rely on personal experience to understand their feeding habits and routes.

桃園石門水庫是台灣聞名的水利建設，豐富資源也養活不少漁民，像是在阿姆坪就有一位捕魚快60年的漁民呂理福，他專抓的是水庫的黑鰻魚，俗稱鱸鰻，他靠著蛇籠，不擺任何魚餌就能抓到鱸鰻，怎麼做到的？一起來了解!
循著蜿蜒水道，一望無際的碧綠水岸與原始綠林，漁民坐在船板上，要到設陷阱處收網。
漁民一拉再拉，收起數百米蛇籠，不僅有大尾鱸鰻活繃亂跳，還有筍殼魚，收穫滿滿。

“(蛇籠)抓比較地底下的魚，鰻啦、筍殼魚。”
將近60年的捕魚經驗、漁民呂理福靠蛇籠抓鱸鰻，蛇籠平均10尺長，每一個間隔都有開洞，小魚進去就出不來，更不用放任何的誘餌，只要在魚類覓食的路上設網、俗稱鱸鰻就會自動上門。

“屬於季節性，地形自己也要注意，像是比較平的地形比較好。這種的抓法不用什麼技術，不用放飼料，就算牠過路，牠自己就跑進去，吃裡面的小隻的魚。”
儘管不用放誘餌，想要成功抓魚，除了瞭解覓食習慣及路徑，還得靠經驗累積。

漁民呂理福專抓黑鰻魚，一籠又一籠都是石門水庫單價高的魚種，靠著長久累積的經驗，還有水庫豐富的生態資源，撐起一家生計。
