Microsoft Taiwan announces further investment plan

2024-11-14

Microsoft’s data center in Taiwan began operations on Thursday. Meanwhile, the company also announced its “AI + Taiwan” initiative, which the Taiwan general manager says will create 48,000 jobs in the country. At the press event, Premier Cho Jung-tai delivered remarks on the government’s plan to advance the AI industry in Taiwan.

Microsoft’s data center in Taiwan is now up and running.

Sean Pien
Microsoft Taiwan general manager
This year, we began AI services on the ground. We will soon usher in a new AI era. We’re now announcing a bigger plan, called “AI + Taiwan.”

Cho Jung-tai
Premier
The government’s plan is Taiwan-plus-AI. The global AI industry cannot do without Taiwan. The AI Taiwan Action Plan aims to inject the spirit of AI service into Taiwan.

To date, three of the world’s largest cloud service providers have planned and running data centers in Taiwan.

The first is Google. It’s now planning a second data center in Tainan, which is said to be the largest in the Asia-Pacific once completed. Microsoft has completed the construction of two data centers in Taoyuan, one in Guishan and the other in Luzhu. They’ll soon start running in stages. Amazon Web Service also plans to construct a data center in Taiwan beginning in 2025 over 15 years.

Premier Cho Jung-tai’s address also touched on Taiwan-US relations.

Cho Jung-tai
Premier
We also hope that when President Trump takes office in the future, US-Taiwan collaborations will continue to deepen, and we’re prepared. We hope Director Greene can help foster greater bilateral cooperation. Thank you again.

He also appeared to respond to AIT Director Raymond Greene’s concern over Taiwan’s electricity supply amid rising demand from the semiconductor industry.

Cho Jung-tai
Premier
Electricity supply is the foundation of data centers. The government will continue to promote our second-stage energy transition with various proposals. We hope to gain more trust and collaborative opportunities with the world.

In the afternoon, Premier Cho gave his second address of the day at the 2024 IT Month, also centered on Taiwan’s AI industry.
