Taipei restaurant offers delicious Czech cuisine

Today we take you to a Taipei restaurant that serves up delicacies from different countries. Until February, diners can enjoy eight dishes from the Czech Republic. This includes delicious fare such as classic Czech beef goulash and potato and pickle salads. FTV reporter Stephany Yang gives us a taste of things to come, as she takes us to meet David Steinke, the Czech representative to Taiwan, to find out what he recommends.

Slices of Camembert cheese are coated with breadcrumbs and deep fried. This traditional Czech appetizer is usually served with potatoes roasted in their jackets, french fries and tartar sauce. Fried cheese is Czech Representative to Taiwan David Steinke’s favorite comfort food.

Perhaps one of the worst sins of Czech cuisine would be fried cheese. So this is also my favorite thing.

This restaurant in Taipei is offering Czech dishes, such as classic Czech beef goulash, potato and pickle salad, Czech mushroom barley casserole, Czech-style fried pork schnitzel, traditional white bean soup, homemade meatloaf with mashed potatoes and blueberry pie.

Thanks to the Czech Office in Taiwan and also our friend, a Czech chef in Taipei, we are able to launch this menu. Also, our culinary team do a lot of good effort into that. It is a real honor to have this chance to bring this to the Taiwanese public.

The restaurant’s “culinary months” have featured dishes from countries including Saint Kitts and Nevis, Belize, Haiti, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Chile and the US. The restaurant will now serve up dishes from the Czech Republic till February.

Microsoft Taiwan announces further investment plan

Microsoft’s data center in Taiwan began operations on Thursday. Meanwhile, the company also announced its “AI + Taiwan” initiative, which the Taiwan general manager says will create 48,000 jobs in the country. At the press event, Premier Cho Jung-tai delivered remarks on the government’s plan to advance the AI industry in Taiwan.

This year, we began AI services on the ground. We will soon usher in a new AI era. We’re now announcing a bigger plan, called “AI + Taiwan.”

The government’s plan is Taiwan-plus-AI. The global AI industry cannot do without Taiwan. The AI Taiwan Action Plan aims to inject the spirit of AI service into Taiwan.

To date, three of the world’s largest cloud service providers have planned and running data centers in Taiwan.

The first is Google. It’s now planning a second data center in Tainan, which is said to be the largest in the Asia-Pacific once completed. Microsoft has completed the construction of two data centers in Taoyuan, one in Guishan and the other in Luzhu. They’ll soon start running in stages. Amazon Web Service also plans to construct a data center in Taiwan beginning in 2025 over 15 years.

He also appeared to respond to AIT Director Raymond Greene’s concern over Taiwan’s electricity supply amid rising demand from the semiconductor industry.

China pins blame for grounded Chinese freighter on Taiwan

Last month, a Chinese freighter ran aground off the coast of Yehliu, after its crew lost control of the vessel due to Typhoon Kong-rey. Now, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office says Taiwan is to blame for the incident. The office claims that Taiwan authorities rejected requests from the vessel to return to port, putting the crew in danger. The Taiwan International Ports Authority says no such requests were made.

Braving the rough seas, staff board the grounded vessel to determine whether it’s possible to empty out its oil tank. The Yu Zhou Qi Hang, a Chinese freighter, has been stranded here for two weeks now. And as of Thursday, its fuel tank has yet to be pumped.

The freighter had set sail on Oct. 29 to avoid strong winds from Typhoon Kong-rey, only to run aground off the coast of Yehliu. The crew was rescued by the port agency and the Coast Guard. China claims Taiwan is to blame for the incident.

Multiple requests to return to port in Keelung were rejected. That evening, the ship lost power and ran aground near Yehliu. Its crew members had no choice but to abandon ship to save themselves.

The Taiwan International Ports Corporation has rejected the claims. In a statement, it said that the Yu Zhou Qi Hang had not requested to return to Keelung Port before it ran aground. It was only after the crew had abandoned ship that requests to take the ship back to Keelung were rejected due to the inclement weather, which would have made the operation dangerous.

The timeline of events is as follows. The Yu Zhou Qi Hang had been forbidden from leaving port on Oct. 24, as it had yet to pay compensation for knocking down a bridge crane at Keelung Port. At 2 p.m. on Oct. 28, it requested to leave port to avoid Typhoon Kong-rey. It was granted permission, and the vessel left port at 7:57 a.m. on Oct. 29. The vessel was unable to proceed further after reaching Yehliu in the afternoon of that same day. The Taiwan International Ports Authority reached out to the vessel and inquired about returning to Keelung Port, but the freighter was unable to turn around. In the end the crew decided to abandon ship, and all 17 members were airlifted to safety by the Coast Guard.

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office is very good at exploiting issues for political maneuvering, even natural disasters like typhoons. But Taiwan is always the most humanitarian and kind-hearted country. I hope China will cease its unification campaign and stop suppressing Taiwan.

The Yu Zhou Qi Hang has suffered misfortune after misfortune, from being ordered to pay damages for crashing against a crane, to now being left stranded off the coast of Taiwan. Though all the crew is safe and sound, China is trying to use the incident to undermine Taiwan’s humanitarian efforts.

Baseball game unites politicians across spectrum

On Wednesday evening, Taiwan’s baseball team won 6-3 against South Korea, much to the delight of Team Taiwan supporters. Turns out even politicians enjoyed the game, too, and even manifested the victory. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an had Korean instant ramen for lunch, while a legislator offered a special magical ginger brew to ensure a Taiwan win. The game even disrupted a private meeting between DPP leaders, not that they’re complaining.

On Wednesday evening, Taiwan’s baseball team hit a grand slam homerun to a cheering crowd. Even Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an jumped up from his seat and high-fived other spectators.

It was really exciting last night to be able to watch Taiwan vs. South Korea at the Taipei Dome with everyone. At the moment of the home run, we were all so excited and jumped up from our seats.

Just hours before the game, Chiang posted a video eating Korean instant ramen. His team hinted that it’s to cast a spell to win against the Korean team.

Yesterday I had Shin Ramyun at noon. It must have worked. I know that we’re playing against Dominican Republic today, so I’ll probably have some Dominican coffee this afternoon.

During the game, DPP faction leaders were having a private gathering at the president’s official residence. Over bentos, Lawmaker Wang Ting-yu sneaked a look at the livestream, and reportedly yelled, “Hell, yeah!” when the grand slam home run was followed by two more points. President Lai Ching-te apparently was curious what caused such a reaction from Wang, and was equally pleased when he found out the score.

We were all eating. It’s a private gathering where we chat over a meal. So I told the president, “It’s 6-0.” And the president was like, “Right, it’s Taiwan vs. South Korea today.” So yeah, I was just sharing with him.

Even lawmakers did their bit to manifest for the victory. During the day, Lawmaker Hung Meng-kai offered ginger tea to ward off the cold — or South Korea. They’re homophones in Mandarin.

So we did beat Korea and had a great start. That’s amazing. Today it’s Dominican Republic. They really are to be revered. But still, apologies in advance. Though you’re here in Taiwan, we will certainly win, and send the Dominicans home.

Baseball once again united people from across the political spectrum. They’re hoping to win again on Thursday evening.

Oil painting exhibition features San Antonio Spurs stars

Today we take you to see an exhibition showcasing oil paintings of NBA basketball team The San Antonio Spurs. Hong Kong artist Roy Cheng is currently holding an exhibition displaying 16 works. FTV reporter Stephany Yang met Cheng to find out more about his exhibition.

This work showcases four life-like paintings of Spurs basketball players Manu Ginóbili, Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, David Robinson and head coach Gregg Popovich.

The legendary players include Tim Duncan, Manu Ginóbili, Tony Parker, David Robinson and their coach Gregg Popovich. They are all championship-winning players. Their team has won a total of five championships over 15 years from 1999 to 2014. In the history of the NBA, no team has been able accomplish the same thing as them. The players I painted before this were usually full length works or action shots of them playing. This time I thought of painting a portrait of them focusing on their faces. Because they have had relatively long careers, I especially found a few pictures of them when they were younger for reference.

Another work is of Spur’s head coach Gregg Popovich. Popovich has led the Spurs to five NBA titles, and is one of only five coaches in NBA history to have won five titles. Popovich is also the longest tenured active coach in the NBA.

He has been with the same team for many years, and has been the coach from 1996 to now. Basically, in the history of the NBA, no other person has been the coach of the same team for such a long period of time. I think he represents the Spurs culture. I think the Spurs’ success and biggest contribution are the players, but another factor that is important is the coach. The main reason why I like this team so much is not because they have won so many championships. This is one of the reasons. The main reason is the culture of their entire team. The management attaches great importance to how to care for and develop new players in the team. I think their success has been accumulated for more than 20 years until now. There is something that each of us can learn from.

This work is Victor Wembanyama. He was selected first overall by the Spurs in the 2023 NBA draft.

The theme is retro so I wanted to add some new players, so that there is a combination between old and new. I painted Victor Wembanyama. He was a star rookie when he entered the league last year. The entire sports media paid attention to him because he has good skills, he is tall, and his arms are also very long. I used brighter colors to give him a younger feel.

Hong Kong artist Roy Cheng held his first exhibition in Taiwan seven years ago. Now he’s back in Taiwan again to showcase his new works. He spent half a year creating new works for the exhibition. Sixteen lifelike oil paintings of basketball stars from the San Antonio Spurs are on display. This exhibition is a collaboration between Cheng and a basketball magazine.

The response to the last exhibition was very good, and fans even came from far away. This time I co-organized it with XXL Basketball Magazine. They have a retro feature every year, and we have cooperated for the fourth consecutive year this year. We thought we could put together an exhibition about the Spurs. The Spurs is my favorite team. There are about 16 pieces of my work from 2016 to 2024. This time it is one team. Because it only features one team, we were worried whether it would be popular or whether it would affect the magazine sales.

Since 2015, Cheng has been creating vivid oil paintings of basketball stars from the NBA. Cheng was interested in painting since a young age but worked in the banking industry for a few years after graduating from university. At the age of 26, he decided to quit his job and pursue his dream of painting. "The Silver Legends of San Antonio Spurs" will be on show at Taipei’s Well Art Cultural & Creative Space till Nov.24.
