Kaohsiung landlord takes aim at gender discrimination with satirical ad

It is common for landlords to have conditions for potential tenants, which may include things like “no pets,” “no smoking,” or “females only.” However, one landlord in Kaohsiung took things even further, indicating in a rental ad that only male renters who have had a vasectomy are welcome. Commenting on the unusual requirement, the landlord said the ad was posted tongue-in-cheek, as a commentary on discriminatory requirements for renters.

There are some landlords who have these restrictions. They feel they must rent only to female tenants, because they’re worried that letting men into the apartment would result in unwanted pregnancies. Well, I wanted to teach them a trick. Just write it directly into the ad that male renters must have a vasectomy to be eligible to rent the apartment. I made a sample ad to show them.

I think there may be elements of discrimination. In particular, the issue of whether a man can reproduce or not has an impact on him. As for whether such an ad is illegal, we often see ads that restrict renting to women or men, and these gender-specific restrictions are not illegal under current laws.

The lawyer explained that although such requirements do have discriminatory connotations, they are not illegal, since they involve a contract formed out of consensus from both parties. Although not illegal, such rental restrictions have become a subject of growing debate.

不少房東要出租房子，都會寫上條件，"不能養寵物"，"限女性"，這類很常見，但高雄卻有房東，開出"男性入住得結紮"的條件，引起討論，房東說，他其實是想規勸同業，租屋不要有太多限制。

“有一些同業他們就是限制，一定要限女性，限女性是為了怕，是不是有男性去會生小孩出來，我就說那我教你一招，你就直接在你的刊登的廣告上面，加一條說限制男性結紮，來我示範給你看”

“我覺得歧視的成分可能會有，特別代表說男性有沒有生殖能力，這件事情，對一個男生來說是有影響的，至於有沒有達到違法程度，我們常見的限女、限男，限定特別性別的，在現行的法律上還沒有違法”

律師解釋，雖然這樣的條件的確有歧視意味，但因為契約制是雙方可做選擇，所以並無違法的疑慮，雖然不觸法，但這樣的租屋條件，也的確變成熱門話題。

TSMC gears up to start mass production at its US fabs by spring

Three years after it first announced plans to set up shop in the US, TSMC says it is now ready to mass-produce chips at US fabs in the coming few months. The company’s Arizona plant is expected to have an initial monthly output of 10,000 chips, and it is also expanding its apprenticeship program in preparation. A local board meeting will be held in February, and while the chairman of the company’s Arizona facility would not confirm whether future expansions are planned, one expert said that expansion was likely, given TSMC’s US customer base.

TSMC announced in 2021 that it was opening fabs in the US, and the following year, it began transferring equipment to its site in Arizona. Now the company has announced that it will be ready to mass produce chips in the US as early as the end of Q1 2025. Some have been describing the achievement as a gift to the Trump administration.

In the coming decade, the US is expected to see faster growth in the semiconductor industry than any other country. Also, the US is only interested in advanced manufacturing processes. Intel keeps losing money, and Samsung is also in bad shape, so of course the US will focus on TSMC.

One of TSMC’s fabs in the US is to produce advanced 4 nanometer chips. In preparation, the company has invested more than US$5 million to expand its apprenticeship program, with new courses to be launched in April ahead of mass production.

TSMC Arizona is investing more than US$5 million in these programs representing full time competitive wages and tuition support.

TSMC plans to have three fabs in the US. One of those is nearly ready for production, while another is under construction with plans for production in 2028. In a recent interview with CNBC, TSMC Arizona Chairman Rick Cassidy was asked if the company was planning to expand in the future. In response, he said that while there is available land, he would not speculate on future plans.

The first board of directors meeting to be held in the US will take place in February. Of the company’s 10 directors, five are American citizens. So taking that into account, it is likely that TSMC will expand its investment in the US in the future.

The consultant argued that TSMC would be likely to expand US operations given that several of its major customers including Apple, Nvidia, AMD and Qualcomm are American companies. Additionally, the US aims to produce the chips used for its defense and military aerospace needs within the US, and that spells opportunity for TSMC, he said.

Baseball pro Lin Li teams up with police on scam prevention

One of Taiwan’s baseball heroes has found a new mission: raising awareness of scams. Taoyuan Police have teamed up with baseball pro Lin Li for their new anti-scam campaign. Lin visited a Taoyuan school to promote the campaign, hosting an event for young baseball fans. They were excited to meet their idol, and to get his signature. Police hope that some of the concepts of scam prevention will also take root.

These school students are full of excitement. Not only do they have a ball signed by baseballer and Premier12 champion Lin Li – they’ve got to meet him in person, after he gave a talk on avoiding scams at their school.

Scams have been consistently growing in number in recent years. Many people have had their life savings stolen, which can be a devastating experience. Pingzhen平鎮 Precinct of Taoyuan Police Department is going all out to combat the phenomenon. They invited Lin Li, a member of Taiwan’s triumphant baseball team, as an ambassador for the cause, to host this event on the theme “Strike Strong, Scams Out!”

Geothermal energy potential found in Taitung’s Wulu

Taiwan has been exploring geothermal energy for 50 years. To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the Industrial Technology Research Institute and the Economics Ministry have teamed up to create a "national geothermal team." They’ve recently made a major discovery that Wulu in Taitung’s Haiduan Township has potential for deep geothermal development. For the first time, researchers have retrieved a complete, three-meter-long core sample from a depth of 2,000 meters. That’s equivalent to four Taipei 101s.

These fully equipped staff are hard at work at the Wulu geothermal well in Taitung’s Haiduan Township. The shaft is as deep as four Taipei 101s.

Senior researchers with the Industrial Technology Research Institute have joined with the Ministry of Economic Affairs to conduct exploration in these mountains, day and night. After five years, they’ve for the first time recovered a complete, 3m-long core sample of granite.

Granite has never been found before in Taiwan’s southeast. The team carefully transported the sample back to Taipei to find out if the heat from the earth’s core can generate electricity.

It’s actually difficult to access the southern mountains. Metamorphic rock is extremely hard. Then it’s also along an orogenic belt, so there are a lot of fissures. Down at the bottom of this 2,000m shaft it reaches over 145 degrees.

Taiwan has been exploring geothermal energy for over 50 years. After setting up the first volcanic geothermal plant in New Taipei’s Jinshan, researchers have been working their way across the Southern Cross-island Highway. Now they’ve set a major milestone.

Before, we said we had no idea how hot it was underneath the Central Mountain Range. The first time we entered the central mountains, this core region, we extracted a wealth of precious materials. Elsewhere in the world, this typically means it’s a steppingstone to deep geothermal, a geological requirement. Of course, we don’t fully understand this granite. It’s the first discovery, so there are still lots of unknowns to be researched.

The national geothermal team is going all-out with plans to generate 1,000MW of power from geothermal between 2028 and 2030, hoping to set Taiwan’s green future on the right path.
