A model train exhibition for high schoolers in Taiwan and Japan is on display in Changhua’s Shetou Township. One model that’s been getting a lot of attention was created by a group of Japanese students. Titled “I Want to Go to Taiwan,” the scene depicts Jiufen Old Street along with the Pingxi sky lanterns.
A train passes over the tracks, chugging past scenery along the way.
An exhibition of model trains made by high schoolers in Taiwan and Japan recently opened in Taiwan, to the delight of model train enthusiasts. Every scene was crafted with immense skill.

Aside from consulting photographs, they’ll also make the structural details. Like for the river, they first used aluminum foil and a thin layer of plaster before painting it to make it really look like a river.
Classic-looking buildings are lined up on the embankment, with dim lamplight shining through the mist. This model was meticulously crafted by over a dozen students from Japan’s Shiraume Gakuen Seishu Junior High, but the subject is Taiwan’s Jiufen.

They combined Jiufen and Pingxi Old Street together since it also needed to have a model train. There are buildings, even lanterns and a bridge. Because of the pandemic they couldn’t go abroad in 2020, so they chose the theme “I Want to Go to Taiwan.”
The students created the famous lantern-lined steps by the Jiufen teahouse as well as nearby Shifen Station, combined with Pingxi sky lanterns to convey their wishes.
The miniatures at this model train exhibition are all exquisitely crafted. Through a different perspective, visitors can enjoy a brand-new way of seeing Jiufen’s old street.
