White House official confirms Taiwan had reached out for talks

2025-04-08

Like many other countries, Taiwan has also reached out to the US for talks after the announcement of US President Donald Trump’s so-called “reciprocal tariffs.” On April 7, Reuters reported that White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett said Taiwan had reached out to the US on the 5th. Premier Cho Jung-tai said the government is well-prepared for talks. Let’s hear more.

Cho Jung-tai
Premier
For now the time and agenda of negotiations cannot be elaborated on to the public yet. But please believe that everything’s being done since the very first day. Moreover, even before April 3, there were already representatives in the US communicating and buying time in any way possible. We definitely have a comprehensive plan, we have the right people, and we will be able to go and have positive negotiations.

Lin Chia-lung
Foreign minister
Any of the options we’ve prepared, as long as there is a confirmed time and method for negotiations, they can be discussed at any time with the US.

Wen Lang-tung
Political commentator
Japan’s stock market is already stabilizing. That means once the US and Japan got into contact, economically speaking, for stockholders and industries, there’s already stability. As for Taiwan, a think tank in Washington DC said lowering tariffs is a great start. But Trump probably wants tariffs to be lowered to 10%. Regarding negotiations with the US, our team has already gone to the US and is ready for the negotiations anytime.

Meanwhile, Taiwan is also actively communicating with the US through various channels including the National Security Council, Taiwan’s representative office in the US, the AIT and AmCham. Commenting on Taiwan’s response, former US diplomat Robert S. Wang said it is in “sharp contrast to Beijing’s immediate retaliatory actions,” adding that he believed that Taiwan’s proposals “should be a good way of starting the talks.”

目前除了談判小組,國安會、駐美代表處、AIT和美國商會,也持續與美方溝通,前美國官員王曉岷分析,台灣的態度,與中國報復式作法呈對比,他斷定非正式談判,可能很快開始。
