Greek woman ‘sad’ after police rejects video of close call with car

A Greek resident of Kaohsiung fed up with the lack of enforcement of traffic rules took matters into her own hands, only to end in disappointment. The woman, called Sophia, recently filmed herself almost getting run over by a car at a zebra crossing in the city. She submitted the video to the police to report the violation, only to be rejected. Police apparently told her the video wasn’t valid because it didn’t show any pedestrians. Let’s hear from her.

And I had to stop, cause the car cut in front of me, and it didn’t slow down or stop for me, it just went by quickly. So I actually felt a little scared, like “Oh my god, what’s happening?” They dismissed it over the fact that “Oh, but we cannot see any person in the video.” I was the one recording, so who else would be in the video! Yeah, I was a little sad.

She submitted a 5-second video of the incident, which did not indicate the time that the incident happened. It also did not show her stepping onto the zebra crossing. As such, it is difficult to prove how much distance there was between the pedestrian and the car, and whether it was enough to constitute as a violation.
Sophia is not the first to complain about Kaohsiung traffic chaos. Many other foreign residents in the city have long reported incidents such as cars failing to yield at pedestrian crossings or scooters riding on the sidewalk. Police officers have asked Sophia to provide additional footage, adding that they will fine motorists that break the rules to create a safer environment.

一名居住在高雄一年多的希臘女子Sophia，多次在路口遇上不禮讓的轎車，所以她經常會一邊走路一邊錄影，沒想到日前她拍下自己在斑馬線上差點遭撞的影片，向警方檢舉，卻被告知影像未見行人不宜舉發，這讓Sophia相當失望。

“我就停下，車子從我前面過，沒有變慢或停下來，直接很快過去，我就有點嚇到，我就想說，歐買尬怎麼回事。他們退回我的案子，說我們看不到影片中有行人，我就是拍影片的人，所以還會有什麼人會出現在影片中啊，對啊，我有點難過”

“因當事人僅提供約五秒鐘的影片，影像中並未標記違規的時間，且無前段行人步入行人穿越道的部分，以至於尚難佐證行人與汽車的實際距離，是否符合違規要件”
不論是未禮讓斑馬線行人，或者是機車騎上人行道，高雄已經有多次讓外籍人士批評對行人不友善，而警方這次也主動聯繫Sophia，希望她提供更完整影像，會針對違規車輛開單舉發，還給大家一個行的安全空間。
