New Taipei promotes senior-friendly workplace certification

Since 2023, New Taipei City has certified 77 workplaces as officially friendly to middle-aged and elderly employees. The Labor Affairs Department Commissioner visited one of them in Tamsui to experience the workplace firsthand, encouraging businesses to foster a healthy working environment.

Carefully assembling the cables, New Taipei City Labor Affairs Department Commissioner Chen Jui-chia acts as a quality inspector for the day.

By connecting the microscope to a monitor, details of the product can be examined more clearly without causing undue stress to the eyes. This is one way this workplace makes its environment more friendly to middle-aged and elderly employees.

For our middle-aged and elderly employees, we offer flexible working hours and flexible working locations. We have an electric pallet truck, microscope magnifier, and digital vernier caliper, and offer advanced health checks. These all help our older colleagues do their work more smoothly and efficiently.

This company in Tamsui was certified as friendly to middle-aged and elderly employees last year. Almost 50% of their 160 employees are within this age bracket. By offering tools to assist with large and small mechanics, the company demonstrates its commitment to employee health and well-being.

新北市推動「中高齡者及高齡者友善職場認證」，2023年起陸續有77家事業單位獲得認證，勞工局長前往其中一家位在淡水的友善職場，親自動手體驗勞工生活，也鼓勵事業單位踴躍提升職場健康環境。

顯微鏡畫面外接到螢幕上，能更清楚檢視產品細節，不僅提高檢查精確度，也减少眼睛的壓力疲勞，就希望讓職場更友善。

“針對中高齡及高齡的同仁，都有實施了彈性的工時，還有彈性的工作地點。我們有購置了電動拖板車，還有顯微放大鏡，還有電子的游標數位卡尺，還有高階的健康檢查，這些都是可以促使中高齡的同仁，在工作之中都更能得心應手。”

淡水這家去年才拿下中高齡友善職場卓越認證的公司，員工160人中高齡就佔了79人，將近百分之50，不管是大型的機械輔具，或是小型3D列印製作的工具，都展現出對員工健康的重視。

Jun T. Lai’s solo exhibition at Taipei Fine Arts Museum

Today we take you to an exhibition showcasing works by Taiwanese artist Jun T. Lai. Nearly 80 works created by Lai from the 1970s onward to the present year are on view. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look!

The room is filled with driftwood, steel, and acrylic sculptures of hearts, mermaids and fish. Lai was inspired by the natural beauty of Dulan, Taitung. The works hopes to showcase Taiwan’s strengths despite being a small island.

It is an installation that occupies the entire space, and it is also a work made on site by Jun Lai for this retrospective exhibition. In addition to the plexiglass sculptures on the wall that everyone has noticed, the elements of the entire work also include wood sculptures on the floor made of driftwood that was damaged by the Aug. 8 Flood. Then there are metal sculptures on the floor and mirrors. Light is also a very important element of this work. There is some yellow light, which is the use of natural light outside the exhibition venue. One highlight of this work is that if you come to this exhibition at different times, you will see different expressions of light. Lai wants to express that Taiwan, as a small island, although peripheral, is not powerless.

Another highlight of the exhibition is this work featuring heart-shaped acrylic sculptures inspired by ocean waves.

It is very transparent. This set of works is created by using plexiglass and Lai’s unique dying technique. Most of the big hearts are blue and green. Overall, it attempts to show the color of the sea and the changes under the sunlight, to convey that everyone is unique.

Lai is a seasoned artist with over 40 years of professional experience. Her works range from paintings and sculptures, to public art installations. Many of Lai’s works explores themes of transformation and harmony. This latest exhibition of hers showcases her most notable works and new creations. The exhibition is divided into four themes, weaving the story of Lai’s career.

The exhibition encompasses Lai’s important graduation project in 1974 to her on-site production in 2025. The exhibited works include two-dimensional paintings, sculptures, all of her important works in each stage of her career, and later public art and spatial installations. In this exhibition, you can also see the Studio of Contemporary Art founded by Jun Lai and her evolution and influence on Taiwan’s contemporary art.

Lai’s exhibition is on view at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum until May 25.

White House official confirms Taiwan had reached out for talks

Like many other countries, Taiwan has also reached out to the US for talks after the announcement of US President Donald Trump’s so-called “reciprocal tariffs.” On April 7, Reuters reported that White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett said Taiwan had reached out to the US on the 5th. Premier Cho Jung-tai said the government is well-prepared for talks. Let’s hear more.

Taiwanese streamer Ray visits US, interviewed by GQ

The internationally renowned streamer Ray, known as “Taiwan’s best high-school student,” has been praised as an unofficial diplomat. He recently visited the US, where he stayed in a US$5million mansion courtesy of his American streamer friend, Kai. He also introduced 10 of his must-have items in the US edition of “GQ,” and even collaborated with basketball star Dwight Howard.

Entrepreneur finds success outside of family business

Boxes of assorted cookies are a common holiday gift offering a wide variety of flavors, some even inspired by breakfast sandwiches. Although his family runs a pastry shop, Lee Han-yi decided to open his own business after falling out with his family during the pandemic. Six year later, his sandwich cookie business has earned over NT$100 million. As he came to understand the challenges of entrepreneurship firsthand, Lee decided to reconcile with his family.

The start of every great cookie begins by kneading dough carefully in a bed of flour.

As cookies bake in the oven, the space quickly fills with their sweet smell. Meanwhile, the other side of the factory is busy making the fillings.

Caramel is dissolved in boiling water and put aside to cool and set. Whether its caramel, peanut, or chocolate filling, controlling the temperature is a crucial part of the process.

If it’s too hot or the temperature is too high, it’s easy for the machine to get damaged. If it’s too cold like it’s been lately or when a cold front comes, the chocolate will set more quickly.

Now in its sixth year, this factory makes almost 40,000 boxes of cookies a day and has earned over NT$100 million. Its founder, Lee Han-yi, grew up in a well-known pastry shop.

Applying marketing techniques he learned growing up, Lee’s cookies are sold at department stores and online. After six years of running his own business, he has reconnected with his family. Now, he is encouraging entrepreneurs like him to enter the foreign market and promote Taiwanese brands internationally.

Netizens curious about how deported Chinese spouses are doing

Netizens are wondering what the three deported Chinese spouses are up to. Earlier, another Chinese spouse in Taiwan wrote on Facebook that the three women received help from China’s Taiwan Affairs Office and were now living comfortably, but then shortly backpedaled. Although one can’t be sure what’s really going on, the minister of the Mainland Affairs Council says they hope the three have self-reflected and wished them well.

Enqi, one of the three recently deported Chinese spouses says on TikTok she’s settling into her new life in Chengdu. As for Xiao Wei, though she’s yet to post new content, her IP location is already updated to Guizhou.

Yaya, who held a press conference before leaving, was immediately ushered away when she landed in China. Her IP still shows Taiwan, meaning she hasn’t logged into her account yet.

Meanwhile, another Chinese spouse in Taiwan, Chen Caihong, posted on a pseudonymous Facebook account that China’s Taiwan Affairs Office had helped the three women settle down so that they were now living comfortably. But shortly after, she backpedaled with another post, with screenshots of text conversations with Yaya and Xiaowei attached, saying that the office had not helped them after returning. She also wrote that Xiao Wei called her a clown for the mistake. Shortly after, Chen closed her Facebook account. We went to her boba shop to ask for clarification, but she wasn’t there.

The shopkeeper on duty rolls down the shutter when she sees that she’s being recorded. So, how are the three women really doing in China? It can’t be confirmed yet.

Cheng Tsung-che becomes 18th Taiwanese to play in MLB

23-year-old Pingtung Native Cheng Tsung-che has been promoted to the Major League Baseball. The Pittsburg Pirates announced the upgrade on social media, making Cheng the 18th Taiwanese to play in the MLB. His hometown is thrilled at the news, with even commissioner Chou Chun-mi celebrating his success. Having played in the minor leagues for five years now, it is a dream come true for Cheng.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have promoted Taiwanese baseball player Cheng Tsung-che to their major league squad. The team formally made the announcement on its official social media accounts.

Dressed in a camel jacket, he heads into the locker room to see his new jersey with the number 71. In his second year in junior high school, the Pingtung native had previously been part of the school team, which won Taiwan’s national championship. In 2019, he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates, kicking off his career in the US. Starting off as a minor league player, he took part in major league spring training for the first time last year. He also joined this year, making 6 hits across 14 games played. His promotion to the major leagues has got people back at his alma mater over the moon.
