Former President Tsai Ing-wen continues on her European tour. On Tuesday, she was in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. She visited the Danish Parliament in the morning and had a luncheon with Taiwan-friendly lawmakers. Later in the afternoon, she gave the closing remarks at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, emphasizing that Taiwan is standing resilient against China’s expansionist ambitions.

It gives me a particular pleasure to shake your hand physically here in Copenhagen, thanking you.

Former Prime Minister of Denmark, Anders Fogh Rasmussen expresses joy at seeing former President Tsai Ing-wen at his foundation’s Copenhagen Democracy Summit in person. In the past, Tsai participated online. Her closing speech on Day One of the summit emphasized Taiwan’s resilience in face of China’s threat of annexation.

Our neighbor thought by routinizing cyberattacks and military exercises, the people of Taiwan would either be debilitated by fear or become complacent. On the contrary, the Taiwanese people used these experiences as the basis to build their resilience. Taiwan’s existence helps keep China’s expansionist ambition in check.

She also said that Taiwan is determined to build its self-defense capabilities, as seen in its growing military budget in recent years.

Threats or coercion will never shake Taiwan’s resolve to engage and contribute to the world.

Earlier, when she arrived at Copenhagen, Denmark, she visited the country’s parliament at the invitation of Taiwan-friendly lawmakers, making her the first former president of Taiwan to visit the Danish Parliament. She shakes hands and exchanges pleasantries with every one, until…

…it’s her turn with a 30-year-old member of parliament, who surprised her with his young age. In Denmark, she received a warm welcome as “Former President of Taiwan.” On Thursday, she’ll land in the UK. It’s rumored that she’ll visit the House of Commons there, as well as give a speech at the London School of Economics, her alma mater.
