The grandfather-in-law of Mandopop icon Jay Chou has won a gold medal javelin at the World Masters Games. But his sports feat at 90 years old is not what’s catching headlines. At a conference after the event, he proclaimed a clear preference for his favorite Taiwanese city, which was NOT the host city Taipei.
90-year old Laurence Quinlivan is the grandfather-in-law of Mandopop superstar Jay Chou. He’s signed up for five sporting events at the World Masters Games, and even won gold in javelin throw.
The Australian national made the trip to Taiwan for the sporting event. Asked about whether he liked Taipei, he said this.
- Do you like Taipei?
- Taipei… so-so. Kaohsiung No. 1.
His response has gone viral in Southern Taiwan, with some netizens editing a photo of him wearing a shirt with his answer front and center. People are saying he should become an ambassador for Kaohsiung tourism.

Hannah Quinlivan did her primary and secondary education at Jia Chang Elementary School and Youchang Junior High School. So her grandfather must have had a lot of opportunities to come to Kaohsiung. I’d really like to thank him for the free promotion he’s done for our city. Thank you.
The director of the city’s tourism bureau says that last year she met Laurence Quinlivan and he expressed interest in promoting Kaohsiung. At their meeting, she gifted him a rubber duck hand-held lantern.

He mentioned how much he loves Kaohsiung, and how passionate he is about helping promote tourism. We gave him a present, a little rubber duck hand-held lantern. I really want to ask him if he assembled it yet.
Quinlivan’s enthusiasm for the southern city has helped Kaohsiung catch media headlines, and hopefully tourists too.

今年世壯運，華語天王周杰倫愛妻昆凌的爺爺勞倫斯，一口氣報名五項賽事，在標槍項目奪金，賽後記者會，被問起喜歡台北城市嗎？他笑著說還好，更喜歡高雄，還大讚高雄No.1，馬上有網友大讚，昆凌爺爺應該當高雄城市代言人。高雄市長陳其邁則說，高雄有非常濃厚人情味，跟很多的好山好水，非常謝謝他幫高雄宣傳。
高齡90歲的勞倫斯，是華語天王周杰倫的愛妻昆凌的爺爺，在世壯運中一口氣報名五項賽事，甚至在標槍項目奪金。
特別從澳洲前來台灣世壯運共襄盛舉，勞倫斯被問起喜不喜歡台北，他這樣說。

影片一出，就引起南部網友瘋傳，甚至有網友馬上用AI幫勞倫斯做了一件白底綠字的新衣服，上頭寫著台北SOSO，高雄NO.1，被大推應該來當高雄城市代言人。

“因為昆凌過去在國小、國中，曾經在加昌國小、右昌國中念書，所以阿公應該有非常多的機會來到高雄，真的非常謝謝昆凌的阿公，免費幫我們高雄宣傳，真的非常感謝”
觀光局長高閔琳也透露，其實去年就和勞倫斯認識，他透露想幫高雄推廣觀光，當時還帶了一隻超夯的小鴨提燈離開。
