Heavy rains on Sunday once wreaked havoc in Hualien, disrupting countless train services. Mudslides on the North-Link Line forced a full suspension of trains between Hualien and Yilan. One train even lost power and became trapped inside the Qingshui Tunnel. Let’s hear more.
Passenger
I noticed the train was moving really slowly, and then the conductor got nervous and said something was wrong. We ended up stuck in the tunnel for about two hours."
Voice of passenger
It’s outrageous. How can Hualien’s tourism develop in these conditions? The power cables snapped, and the entire train was trapped in the tunnel without electricity.
Railway engineers are rushing to repair the damage and restore electrical supply to the tracks. They are also clearing debris from inside the tunnel, which is a difficult operation due to the limited space. The Taiwan Railway says that train services in the affected area will allow standing passengers on Monday, and the transport ministry has added extra plane, ferry and road services on Monday and Tuesday. Single-track services could start as early as Wednesday, with normal services to start on Saturday at the earliest.
