A curious scene was recently witnessed at a blooming lotus pond in Yilan’s Yuanshan Township: someone picked a flower and tied a NT$100 bill on the stem. The owner of the pond found the gesture amusing, but still urged visitors not to pick his flowers. Let’s find out more.
Lee Hsiao-ting
Yuanshan Township representative
The landowner thought it’s adorable that someone would tie a banknote there. But he said he also noticed that many people have picked his flowers, so he said this morning that he’s going to offer the NT$100 to a temple and pray that people stop picking his lotuses.
Hsieh Ming-jung
Lotus pond owner
I think it’s alright for people to come here and look at the flowers, but please don’t pick the flowers, because the lotus seeds can’t be harvested yet. I found it quite adorable that this one flower picker left a NT$100 bill where the flower should be. It’s the first time in more than ten years I’ve encountered something like this.
Perhaps the thief thought their action wouldn’t be considered stealing if they “paid” for the lotus. Although the lotus pond owner didn’t seem to be too mad, he obviously hoped people could stop picking his flowers.
