Visually impaired patissier creates colorful and tasty art

In the heart of Kaohsiung’s Gangshan District, a pastry chef is turning the world of desserts upside down. Despite seeing only black, grey and white due to his visual impairments, Li Yu-chang creates vibrant, intricate pastries that are as stunning as they are delicious. His dessert shop is a testament to his dedication, offering sweet creations that are crafted with precision and passion.

This table is filled with colorful desserts. These delicate and beautiful foods were all made by Lee Yu-chang, who is partially sighted.

At 34 years old, Lee, is both dedicated and hardworking as he runs a dessert shop in Kaohsiung’s Gangshan District. Lee has a congenital condition that has resulted in him having 20/200 vision even with glasses. In addition, he is color blind and sees only in black-and-white.

Most people, including my supervisors and colleagues, don’t know how serious my eye condition actually is. It’s hard for me to explain it to them. It’s easy to be bullied in the workplace or when I was at school.

As he had poor eyesight since he was young, I was actually worried that he would starve to death, so I often encouraged him to get qualifications.

Though he is legally blind, he did not give up, learning bartending, baking, coffee and desserts. Nothing could stop him. So far he has accumulated about 15 professional certificates, and underwent further training to become a Le Cordon Bleu patissier.

The school from France has set up a branch in Taiwan. They have a long history, so I wanted to learn traditional techniques.

The scent of roses is very fragrant and there is a light syrupy taste on top.

The store is replete with owl decorations. Lee says as he had to wear thick glasses ever since he was a child, which earned him the nickname of “Little Doctor Owl.” Although the road ahead was difficult, with constant effort and persistence, Lee was able to overcome obstacles to forge a successful life.

高雄岡山就有一間甜點店,甜點師是34歲的李侑昌,他的世界只有黑灰白三種顏色,但他靠著不斷學習,闖出自己的一片天,還創造出各種精緻甜點。

桌上擺滿五顏六色的甜點,這些精緻又漂亮的食物,全都出自於一位視障甜點師的手。

專注認真工作的李侑昌,今年34歲,在高雄岡山區經營一間甜點店,患有先天性視覺障礙的他,即使矯正後視力還是不到0.1,天生弱視還有色盲,他看見的世界,只有黑灰白三種顏色。

“大部分的人,主管啊,或是同事之間,都不知道我眼睛的狀況,到底多嚴重,我也很難跟他們解釋,一直在職場或求學階段,就蠻容易被欺負啊”

“因為從小他眼睛就不好,我其實他從小,我就擔心他會餓死,所以我常會鼓勵他,去考一些證照”

領有重度視障手冊的李侑昌,沒有因此放棄,透過不斷學習,調酒、烘焙、咖啡、甜點,樣樣都難不倒他,累積至今已考取約15張專業證照,更透過進修成為法國藍帶甜點師。

“法國來台灣開設的分校,因為它是法國比較起源的一個甜點學校,所以我就想說學比較正統的技術”

店內滿是貓頭鷹的小裝飾,李侑昌說因為自己從小就戴著厚厚的眼鏡,因此有貓頭鷹小博士的綽號。雖然一路上跌跌撞撞,但在不斷努力與堅持下,突破重重難關,活出屬於自己的一片天。
