In response to the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and its growing influence on education, Tzu Chi University has partnered with the Paramitas Education Association to sign a memorandum of understanding for adopting FedGPT AgentTeam, a learning platform developed by Taiwan AI Labs. The initiative aims to integrate the platform into educational settings to enhance learning outcomes. FTV reporter Stephany Yang has the details.

The MOU was signed by Dr. Ingrid Liu, President of Tzu Chi University, and Huang Wen-chin, Chairman of the Paramitas Education Association. The collaboration focuses on four key areas: platform deployment and technical support, curriculum integration, joint project development and results sharing, and ethical standards in data usage.

The primary objective is to utilize the student learning portfolio platform developed by the Paramitas Education Association to identify high school and vocational school students who are best suited for admission to Tzu Chi University. We also aim to provide learning materials to support their smooth progression from secondary to higher education. In addition, we are employing the FedGPT platform, developed by Taiwan AI Labs, to match various data resources within the Tzu Chi enterprise.

We are currently working on building connections between universities. At the moment, many of these students are highly interested in AI, but they feel lost and overwhelmed due to the abundance of misleading information out there.

FedGPT AgentTeam, developed by Taiwan AI Labs, is an AI platform that facilitates secure, trustworthy collaboration across internal and external systems. One of its standout features is a 24-hour AI teaching assistant that provides instant responses to student inquiries, along with personalized guidance and resources tailored to each student.

Tzu Chi University can input its internal registration and academic-related data into the Agent Team’s RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) system. This enables the platform to accurately respond to questions about the university’s courses and curriculum.

The first goal is cultivating AI talent—for example, our Computer Science, Health Informatics, and Biomedical Engineering departments, which are dedicated to training individuals to develop AI technologies. The second focus is on nurturing talent to be skilled in the application of AI.

Tzu Chi University hopes to continue to integrate AI into its curriculum, allowing students to understand and apply AI.

China Medical University in Taichung has a leading development in next-generation applications of extracellular vesicles, or EVs in treating various diseases, including cancers. On Tuesday, the university held a forum, with leading researchers from the US and Taiwan taking part. The keynote speaker was Dr. Randy Schekman, who won the Nobel Prize in 2013. Dr. Sheckman was also announced as the R&D consultant for the university’s research project in developing the SOB100 EV platform.

Members of the audience appear fully concentrated in hearing the presentation. This high-level forum is being held at China Medical University’s Shuinan Campus. Experts from Taiwan and the US, including research scientists, clinical experts and biotechnology industry leaders are here to discuss novel therapeutic applications of extracellular vesicles, or EVs, particularly exosomes, in treating cancer and neurodegenerative diseases through immunoregulation.

In our body, exosomes are produced from all of the tissues in our body. They’re a kind of little reporters of what’s going on in the body. So I think that’s gonna be their most useful, beneficial application. And then just being able to isolate them and characterize them is basic science is going to provide biotechnology with tools they need to interrogate.

The leading authority at the forum is none other than Dr. Randy Schekman, a winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He’s also the research and development consultant for the university’s and a biomedical company’s joint venture in next-generation EV therapeutics, elevating the initiative to the international stage.

They’re not only used in treating cancer, but also have promising applications in severe conditions, such as dementia and Parkinson’s disease. EVs can even possibly change the course of treatment altogether, so they really have great potential in the future.

The project aims to develop HLA-G targeting exosomes called SOB100. After extensive development, SOB100 has been approved by the US FDA and has began Phase One clinical trials. Of course, there were challenges to overcome.

A great challenge for the production process that’s inherent to EVs was that unlike cells, EVs cannot stay active under frozen conditions. How to prolong their shelf life as a drug, if you will, was a considerable challenge to overcome in terms of production.

Researchers at leading institutions in Taiwan, such as National Health Research Institutes and Academia Sinica also presented at the forum, driving the development of cutting-edge EV precision therapeutics in the country.

Hotel warns bookings through third-party platforms may be lost

A Japanese hotel chain posted a notice on its official website warning travelers to be cautious when booking through third-party platforms. Recently, there have been multiple cases in which bookings were confirmed, but the hotel had no record of the reservation. The notice named a well-known third-party platform as the source of the issue. Travel experts think the problem may stem from reselling rooms, and reminded people to double-check their reservations after booking.

Excited to travel abroad, some people searched on a third-party platform to find this Japanese chain hotel and successfully booked it online. But when they got to the desk to check in, there was no record of the reservation.

How did this happen? Similar incidents have occurred multiple times, prompting the hotel to publish a notice on its official website.

The hotel warned of several major problems that can occur when rooms they allocate to partner websites are sold through third-party overseas platforms such as Agoda: The room cannot be guaranteed, the room type and date may be incorrect, the hotel cannot confirm the reservation, or the customer may book the room at a higher price and be unable cancel it. Travelers should contact the platform to confirm their booking, as the hotel cannot confirm, adjust, or cancel it.

It’s the first time the hotel has released a public statement, so maybe it’s really fed up. If the situation weren’t so serious, it wouldn’t publicly call out the platform. People have also started coming to me saying they were suddenly without a room. This has happened many times in the past few years.

It’s convenient to compare hotel prices on third-party platforms, and they often have lots of deals. But they sometimes resell rooms, or rooms the hotel offers to one platform will also end up on another. After a booking is placed, the information needs to be passed through multiple layers, which takes time. At peak season when everyone is booking stays, some reservations get lost in the process.

It has to pass through a lot of hands, which means that the process of going back to confirm the reservation takes a while. When confirming the reservation, there’s an information gap and time lag which, under those circumstances, if room availability is tight and you need a certain type of room or have specific requirements, they may not be fulfilled in time.

When booking rooms on third-party platforms, it’s important to double-check the booking with the platform or the hotel. This will make sure your travel goes smoothly, and you have a nice place to stay.

Visually impaired patissier creates colorful and tasty art

In the heart of Kaohsiung’s Gangshan District, a pastry chef is turning the world of desserts upside down. Despite seeing only black, grey and white due to his visual impairments, Li Yu-chang creates vibrant, intricate pastries that are as stunning as they are delicious. His dessert shop is a testament to his dedication, offering sweet creations that are crafted with precision and passion.

This table is filled with colorful desserts. These delicate and beautiful foods were all made by Lee Yu-chang, who is partially sighted.

At 34 years old, Lee, is both dedicated and hardworking as he runs a dessert shop in Kaohsiung’s Gangshan District. Lee has a congenital condition that has resulted in him having 20/200 vision even with glasses. In addition, he is color blind and sees only in black-and-white.

Most people, including my supervisors and colleagues, don’t know how serious my eye condition actually is. It’s hard for me to explain it to them. It’s easy to be bullied in the workplace or when I was at school.

As he had poor eyesight since he was young, I was actually worried that he would starve to death, so I often encouraged him to get qualifications.

Though he is legally blind, he did not give up, learning bartending, baking, coffee and desserts. Nothing could stop him. So far he has accumulated about 15 professional certificates, and underwent further training to become a Le Cordon Bleu patissier.

Lee says as he had to wear thick glasses ever since he was a child, which earned him the nickname of “Little Doctor Owl.” Although the road ahead was difficult, with constant effort and persistence, Lee was able to overcome obstacles to forge a successful life.

Health officials and lawmakers urge the public to get latest Covid vaccine

Although the latest wave of Covid has passed its peak earlier, the comedown is slowing down and mortality rates are still high. Meanwhile, vaccination rate for the new vaccine has yet to reach 10%. With more than 3 million shots still available, lawmakers on Tuesday held a press conference to urge the public to get vaccinated, with Minister of Health and Welfare Chiu Tai-yuan leading by example getting a jab.

Unlike the flu, people are less inclined to get vaccinated against Covid regularly, but only different types of vaccines can protect against different strains of virus.

The inoculation rate is relatively low at present, at least the latest figure I have is only 9.2%. There are still more than 3 million shots of the JN.1 vaccine, and they’ll expire soon, in September.

The current Covid strain is even more contagious. Even more concerning is how the average person’s vigilance or sense of crisis cannot at all compare to the pandemic only a few years ago.

A new variant of Covid is still going strong. After reaching a peak in early June, case numbers have yet to come down by a significant margin. Cases of hospitalization for severe symptoms and death are still at their peak. The JN.1 vaccine is specifically developed for this wave of mutant virus, and differs from the previous XBB vaccine. The Ministry of Health and Welfare urges everyone who last got vaccinated against Covid before Oct. 1 last year to get their shots. As for high risk groups, including those aged 65 and above, those with compromised immunity, and those with a history of chronic diseases can get a second dose after 60 days.

For all the cases of death from severe Covid, those with chronic diseases and the unvaccinated account for more than 85%. You may think you’re fine because you’ve gotten Covid or got vaccinated in the past, but the mutant strains have a higher rate of antigenic escape. You may have contracted Covid before or got vaccinated last year, but that doesn’t stop you from getting Covid again.

According to research, the JN.1 vaccine protects against severe, life-threatening symptoms by more than 50%. Now that it’s summer vacation season, a greater number of people may travel abroad or go out more often, which greatly increases the chance of contracting the virus. Officials are leading by example and urging the public to also get vaccinated so that they’re protected against Covid.
