Celebrity cat French Fry goes missing after air raid drills

A celebrity cat called French Fry has sadly gone missing from his Chinese medicine shop on Taipei’s Dihua Street. The cat was apparently scared off by the sirens from Thursday’s air raid drills, and has yet to return home. An army of loyal fans has mobilized to try and find him as soon as possible.

This is French Fry, the guardian cat of a Chinese medicine shop on Dihua Street. Though famous for his grumpy expression, the kitty loves to get attention from customers, and is usually quite calm. Sad news is French Fry has gone missing.

He was scared off by the air raid drill sirens. They’re scary for people, and even more so for cats.

Just after the drill started, at about 1:35 he went outside right in front of us. As soon as the air raid drill sirens started, he freaked out and ran away.

French Fry’s romantic partner, Chanel, is devastated by his absence. Usually she is calm and collected, but now she spends all day waiting at the entrance for French Fry to return. Their owners went out on a search until midnight, and have put up signs to get help in finding the cat.

We went crazy looking for him. We were talking to ourselves and calling out “French Fry! French Fry!” to see if he’d come. French Fry is such a darling to everyone. We all love him. But still he ran away. A lot of people are asking us if we’ve found him.

Netizens have come up with a strategy to locate him. At 11 at night, when there’s fewer people and cars, they’ll bring cans of cat food nearby and make noise, and spread used litter to help guide French Fry back home.

台北市大稻埕迪化街一間中藥行飼養的貓店長「薯條」因眼神厭世出名，加上親人個性在網路上擁有超高人氣。但飼主突然PO出尋貓啟事，表示薯條17日下午被演習警報聲嚇到，衝出門後就再也沒回家，希望廣大網友可以幫忙尋貓，在網路上引發討論。

同樣不捨傷心的還有他的另一半，貓咪香奈兒，平時高貴文靜，卻遲遲等不到老公薯條回來，整天坐在門口等。飼主心急如焚找貓找到半夜，網路上也出現尋貓啟示。

有網友分享尋貓攻略，晚上11點後人車較少，帶罐頭到附近敲罐罐，記得要定點停留，沿途灑一些使用過的貓砂，幫助貓店長薯條能早點回家！

Artisan upholds handmade incense craft amid industry decline

Many people in Taiwan light incense sticks to pray at temples, a tradition that has been practiced for centuries. Chen Chih-ming has been making incense for nearly half a century, using all-natural materials. Consistently developing new products, he recently released tea leaf and coffee-scented incense. Chen continues to bring fresh ideas to this field, which has been declining in recent years.

Every day before dawn, Chen Chih-ming starts working at his factory, taking advantage of the cloudless skies. Chen covers bamboo sticks in a special blend of Chinese herbal incense powder, making sure that the incense covers each stick evenly. With decades of experience, Chen is an expert at this.

Chen began making incense when he was 13 because his family needed the financial support. After studying this craft with many teachers, he settled down in Yunlin County’sDapi Township, where he has been making incense for almost 50 years. But now, with the rise of environmentalism and the competition of low-price incense from China, Taiwan’s incense industry is facing a crisis. Boldly confronting these challenges, Chen continues to make incense using all-natural materials like tea leaves, jasmine and coffee. An innovator, he is consistently developing new products.

I researched the scent of hot water being poured over tea leaves when brewing tea, figuring out how to recreate it using incense materials. I wanted to use everyday things from home to make incense that can be lit and used to pray.

Despite the industry’s decline, Chen has remained steadfast. He continues to make incense by hand, preserving traditional methods amid the mechanization of the industry. He hopes to find an apprentice so he can pass on this traditional craft.

Tainan orchid industry losses top NT$2bn from Typhoon Danas

The orchid industry in Tainan was among the sectors hit hard when Typhoon Danas swept past southern Taiwan earlier this month, causing losses of over NT$2 billion in just two-and-a-half hours. It exacerbated problems for the already-struggling industry, extending its road to recovery. In addition to expected shortages and price fluctuations in the near term, there are also fears of a persistent decline in the city’s orchid sector.

Tainan orchids are renowned globally. But the prized blooms are facing a crisis after Typhoon Danas earlier this month damaged numerous greenhouses, destroying seedlings.

Our air conditioning doesn’t work. The flowers have starting to mildew. They all need to be cut off and thrown away. A lot of businesses are ruined because their generators won’t start.

Orchids need two years under stringent environmental controls to bloom. Growers were already facing the impact of US tariffs and unfavorable exchange rates. Now their woes have been compounded by typhoon damage.

More than NT$2 billion was lost in just over two hours. Losses were especially severe in Beimen and along the coast, but it’s been bad for everyone. Every grower is short on stock now. Without flowers, we can’t make arrangements. They’ll also be more expensive. At the moment, prices have risen by around 20%.

The damage has made a bad situation even worse for orchid growers, extending their long road to recovery. In the near term, stock shortages and price fluctuations are expected. But there are also worries of a general decline or stagnation in the industry.

Losses of white blooms may affect the Japanese market. Since more than half are from Taiwan, it’ll affect the entire supply chain.

As they weather compounding challenges, Tainan’s orchid growers are looking to the government for help in restoring life to this internationally acclaimed industry as soon as possible.

The award-winning stage adaptation of Life of Pi has dazzled audiences around the world. It is now showing in Taiwan, featuring stunning puppetry and immersive visuals. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke with the cast and crew to learn more about the production.

The award-winning stage adaptation of Life of Pi has made a stop in Taiwan, featuring intricate puppetry and stunning visuals. Kashif Ghole and Sonya Venugopal will take turns playing the role of Pi. Traditionally portrayed by male actors, Pi is reimagined by Sonya Venugopal as a female character, adding a new layer of emotional depth to the role.

One of the beautiful things that our writer Lolita did was create a show and write a script that any gender can play any role. That is something I haven’t really experienced in any other productions I have done in my life and in my career. I think there was a lot. You are a bit hesitant at first but the beautiful thing is this story is about the story. It is about survival. It is about love. It is about perseverance and that can be portrayed by any gender in any role.

In terms of preparing, I kind of just wanted to learn a little more about puppeteering, and we got that opportunity to learn about it. We even attempted to even a fragment of the work that the lovely puppeteers do in one of the weeks in our rehearsal period.

Yann Martel’s fantastic novel was adapted for film by, of course, Ang Lee using all sorts of brilliant techniques like CGI and the ability to jump cut between scenes. We of course, don’t have that in the theater, but what we do have is live people in front of us and storytelling that is present and calling back to a storytelling tradition that goes back to centuries and centuries of just people sitting in front of you and delivering a story in a really simple way using bodies and words. We got some incredible technical advancements which help us jump between Pondicherry Zoo, the market, and then jump us in seconds to the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

This theatrical version, adapted by Lolita Chakrabarti brings Yann Martel’s novel to life using giant animal puppets and integrates immersive visual effects and stage effects. At the press conference, puppeteer director Tom Stacy shares the key elements in making puppets come alive on stage and the difficulties.

It is about not only the physicality which is very hard, but about creating the character. We have three people on the tiger but we actually have eight puppeteers all in all, who all share the role. We actually got many puppets on the show. We have an orangutan, we have a zebra, we have a hyena, a giraffe, and meerkats. They have to embody all these characters each time, sometimes very quickly. So to do that, it takes a lot of training and effort for them to have one mind and one character and I think that is also the beauty of seeing something come alive truthfully on stage.

We’ve probably been discussing about bringing Life of Pi to perform here for several years. During the pandemic, we kept talking about whether it would be possible to bring it to Taiwan. We were so drawn to this production, and we worked so hard to bring it here. It’s not only about having great actors, it is also about the theatrical magic and how immersive the production is. It easily draws the audience into the story.

The production will be staged until Jul. 27 at the National Theater and Concert Hall, featuring a total of 13 performances.
